UW Medicine Faculty Practice Plan Services (FPPS) supports UW Physicians (UWP), a practice group for more than 1,800 physicians and other healthcare professionals associated with UW Medicine. UW Medicine includes Harborview Medical Center, UW Medical Center - Montlake, UW Neighborhood Clinics, UW Medical Center - Northwest, the UW School of Medicine, Valley Medical Center, and Airlift Northwest. UWP members also practice at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, a partnership of UW Medicine, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, and Seattle Childrens Hospital.

UW Medicine Faculty Practice Plan Services has an outstanding opportunity for a Benefits Manager, UW Physicians (UWP). Reporting to the Controller, this individual will be responsible for design, administration and communication of a complex benefit program for the two faculty group practices of the University of Washington: UW Physicians (UWP) and Childrens University Medical Group (CUMG). This position has overall responsibility for directly supervising the Benefits Specialist.

  • Manage the retirement plans and health/welfare benefits administration.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations pertaining to all benefit plans.
  • Review and analyze changes to state and federal laws and report necessary or suggested changes to senior management and the joint UWP-CUMG Retirement & Benefits (R & B) Committee.
  • Lead the strategic planning of health & welfare and retirement benefits for UWP and CUMG.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with all UWP, CUMG, and UW Medicine stakeholders.
  • Manage the relationship with brokers, insurance carriers, trustees, and other administrative agencies outside the company to ensure benefit program is administered effectively.
  • Assist Controller in support of the R&B Committee including preparation of documents for meetings and presentations to the UWP Board of Trustees and CUMG Board of Directors.
  • Generate and coordinate communications to physicians regarding changes to benefits.
  • Respond to and resolve benefit inquiries and concerns from UWP physicians and serve as a resource for CUMG staff on inquiries and concerns from CUMG physicians and staff.
  • Prepare and execute, with legal consultation, benefit documentation including plan documents, summary plan descriptions, benefit agreements and insurance policies.
  • Develop new employee benefit orientation, communication materials and other educational opportunities for all staff and members.
  • Perform other duties, as assigned.

  • Bachelor's degree in business administration, accounting, finance, or related field required.
  • Five years of experience with with benefits administration including multiple retirement plan administration and benefit compliance experience required.
  • Two years of supervisory / management experience required.
  • Three years of ADP Enterprise or other HRIS/payroll system administration experience strongly preferred.
  • Proficiency with Windows based software and Microsoft Office Suite products in a network environment.
  • Superior Excel Skills (i.e. v-look ups, pivot tables).
  • Knowledge of ADP Enterprise V5 preferred.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute for stated requirements.

  • Advanced research and analytical skills.

  • In depth knowledge of benefits and regulatory requirements.
  • Strong command of the English language. Strong writing skills and excellent oral and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to convey a positive and professional image in person, to work effectively with physicians and departmental staff.
  • Ability to deal effectively in a highly political environment and with diverse personalities and backgrounds.
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with all stakeholders outside the organization. i.e. benefits participants, the public, government, benefits vendors.
  • Ability to conduct compliance audits and take corrective actions on any findings.
  • Ability to evaluate current workflows and processes to identify and develop proposals for improvement.
  • In depth knowledge of HRIS and payroll systems.
  • Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables.
  • Ability to manipulate data and other information management tools for analysis and reporting purposes.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and decision-making.

  • Benefits certification (CEBS, CBP) preferred.
