This position is involved in the development and qualification of advanced lithium ion battery technology for portable power consumer applications. You will work with internal multi-functional teams to develop physics-based electrochemical models of target designs based on calibrations and design assumptions. In addition, you develop capability to simulate cell aging versus load and operating conditions. You will work with internal and external resources to validate the models to high levels of confidence. Guidance will be provided to internal cell engineering staff and external vendor base to optimize cell design, cell performance and, where applicable, cell production issues.

Key Qualifications

• Four years or more of battery design, electrochemical modeling experience on lithium ion or lithium polymer battery using commercial software such as COMSOL, CD-Adapco, or Ansys
• Excellent knowledge of capacity fade and cell impedance growth mechanisms
• Working knowledge of Matlab, VBA, Python, etc, to extract information from large data
• Familiarity with applicable test equipment, test procedures, international standards and certified agency requirements applicable to rechargeable lithium battery products
• Familiarity with current state of the art production processes applicable to lithium rechargeable cells skills
• Strong aptitude in electrochemical engineering and mathematical modeling
• Ability to motivate and work independently with minimal oversight required
• Ability to interact optimally with other specialists and teams
• Self-starter with excellent time management skills and entrepreneurial spirit
• Ability to clearly understand and explain technical issues
• Ability to clearly support technical decisions based on data and results

Description
- Mathematical modeling of the electrochemical behavior of lithium ion cell designs using established platforms such as COMSOL Multiphysics, CD-Adapco, or Ansys
- Work with cell and battery engineering groups to verify accuracy of mathematical models and performance details to meet application requirements
- Conduct investigations, prepare status reports related to cell design and performance issues, and help to resolving issues as required
- Simulation of new cell designs
- Contribute to the development of performance specifications and assist with establishing cell design
- Pursue development of intellectual property to protect technology developments and secure competitive edge
- Act as technical contact point for electrochemical characterization and mathematical modeling software, techniques and application

Education & Experience

PhD (Required) in Material Science, Electrochemistry, Chemical Engineering, or equivalent

Additional Requirements

• (5%) Travel to external vendors, suppliers and manufacturing facilities is expected
