Job Description

The Applied Systems Laboratory (ASL) of the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) is seeking an enthusiastic technical candidate interested in supporting ASL's Aviation Systems Division (ASD) to assist with leading and managing the development of solutions that advance the mission of the Army Program Executive Office Aviation. Candidates should have a strong background in avionic systems implemented in rotary-wing AH-64, UH-60, and CH-47, and Unmanned Aerial Systems such as Gray Eagle. The successful candidate will be a member of the Test and Evaluations Branch and report to Branch Chief, assisting with technical efforts of ongoing programs.

The Aviation Test Engineer will support system design, development, integration, and test of avionics systems and software for Army Aviation platforms including special attention with regard to multi-core processing and steps needed to achieve flight worthiness certification for multi-core solutions.

Job Duties

  • Interact with technical sponsors
  • Develop whitepapers focused on test approaches, techniques, and results
  • Collaborate with development teams within GTRI for program-specific testing concerns
  • Participate as needed in analysis, design, and integration for systems under development
  • Perform testing of developed solutions
  • Performs testing and evaluation of avionics system engineering, decomposition of requirements further into hardware and software requirements to assist with verification of the hardware and software implementation against the requirements
  • Document evaluated system configurations and prepared test results and analysis
  • Use system specifications and interface descriptions for integration and testing of aircraft systems
  • Ensure technical work is performed to appropriate professional standards and technical requirements are met.
  • Other duties as assigned

Education & Length of Experience

Research Engineer/Scientist/Associate II

  • A Bachelor's and a Master's degree required with one or both in Mathematics, Computer Science, Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Engineering and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Bachelor's and a Master's degree required with one or both in Mathematics, Computer Science, Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Engineering and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelors degree, or
  • A Master's and Doctoral degree required with one or both in Mathematics, Computer Science, Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Engineering.

Senior Research Engineer/Scientist/Associate

  • A Bachelor's and a Master's degree required with one or both in Mathematics, Computer Science, Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Engineering and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Bachelor's and a Master's degree required with one or both in Mathematics, Computer Science, Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Engineering and nine (9) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelors degree, or
  • A Master's and Doctoral degree required with one or both in Mathematics, Computer Science, Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Engineering and four (4) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor's degree.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience in hardware, software, and firmware development methodologies and structured approaches to system development
  • Strong coordination, organization, teaming, and communication abilities
  • Works well individually or in a group setting
  • Ability to work under pressure and time constraints
  • Ability to multi-task among multiple active projects
  • Ability to present technical information to sponsors and potential customers

Preferred Qualifications

  • History of being a proactive self-starter
  • Working knowledge of RTOS's including Green Hills, QNX, VxWorks, or LynxOS
  • System Safety and Software Safety requirements IAW DO-178C, MIL-STD-882E, ISO-26262
  • Experience with military avionics and sensor networks including 1553 data bus, ARINC-429, Ethernet, and serial interfaces
  • Knowledge of or experience with open system architecture such as FACE, HOST, MOSA, and SOSA is preferred
  • Experience with configuration management and requirements management systems such as DOORS, JIRA, MKS or ClearCase is preferred
  • Experience using scripting languages for data analysis (Perl or Ruby or VBA)
  • Effectively work in small teams of GTRI and government members
  • Working knowledge of Agile SW development methodologies

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.
