Job Description

The Applied Systems Laboratory (ASL) of the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) is seeking an enthusiastic technical candidate to fill a leadership position for the Aviation Architecture & Development Branch (AADB) within the Aviation Systems Division (ASD) of the Applied Systems Laboratory (ASL). The role will lead a team of software engineering researchers responsible for technical research and innovation within the core competency of the branch. Branch capability areas include Real-Time Operating System (RTOS) embedded software development, aviation/avionics reference architecture-based software development, software safety, and security, sensor-based algorithm development, and implementation, Machine Learning, and Artificial Intelligence for aviation platforms.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • Set the technical vision for the branch and execute a strategy to meet that vision
  • Maintain a high-level understanding of the research and be capable of conveying reasonable detail to potential research sponsors
  • Work in a matrix organization to identify new research opportunities, lead proposal efforts to secure funding, and work with project managers for resource allocation against projects
  • Maintain a high level of technical engagement among several technical tasks throughout the ASD
  • Support conferences, sponsor briefings, and participate in delivering content with other technical outreach activities
    Responsible for all aspects of personnel management within the team (includes career growth, travel approvals, timesheets, appraisals, etc.) coordinate with project managers to ensure coverage of his or her team, ensuring projects have the correct resources and team members are adequately engaged
  • Represent a leadership role to the ASD, aiding division management in its operation and continued growth
  • Provide summary information to division management representing vision, strategy, goals, and overall health of the branch periodically to include strategic thinking concerning areas of improvement or research expansion within the division
  • Take and maintain management training as required for this position
  • Facilitate branch participation in annual laboratory IRAD proposal and funding
  • Facilitate branch participation in GTRI Strategic Initiative IRAD proposal and funding
  • Manage customer relationships, including communicating GTRI vision and team resource needs
  • Engage in discussions and collaborate with project managers to secure initial/ongoing funding for existing tasks
  • Present a detailed branch of health and status to the ASL Leadership Council once per quarter

Education & Length of Experience

Research Engineer/Scientist/Associate II

  • A Masters degree in Mathematics, Computer Science, Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Engineering or related technical field and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Masters degree in Mathematics, Computer Science, Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Engineering or related technical field and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelors degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Mathematics, Computer Science, Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Engineering or related technical field.

Senior Research Engineer/Scientist/Associate

  • A Masters degree in Mathematics, Computer Science, Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Engineering or related technical field and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Masters degree in Mathematics, Computer Science, Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Engineering or related technical field and nine (9) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelors degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Mathematics, Computer Science, Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Engineering or related technical field and four (4) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelors degree.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • 10+ years prior experience in architecture development and software engineering
  • 5+ years experience managing a cross-functional team of software developers and engineers
  • Experience in engineering management with a thorough knowledge of engineering processes
  • Experience in agile software development methodology
  • Experience in embedded software development, particularly as it relates to DO-178 software safety
  • Knowledge and ability to decompose system requirements into software requirements; provide technical and guidance to lower-level technical personnel as necessary
  • Strong leadership qualities with proven interpersonal and team working skills
  • Computer literate and an experienced user of Microsoft Office suite of Programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Project) and Atlassian Suite
  • Knowledge of aviation quality systems, airworthiness, aircraft avionic systems, sensor fusion
  • Knowledgeable and proficient in using Technical publications relating to work responsibilities
  • Ability to work under pressure and time constraints
  • Experience in software development methodologies and structured approaches to software development
  • Ability to present technical information to sponsors and potential customers

Preferred Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of RTOSs including Green Hills, QNX, VxWorks, or LynxOS
  • Experience with software for military avionics and sensor networks including 1553 data bus, ARINC-429, Ethernet, and serial interfaces
  • Knowledge of or experience with open software architecture such as FACE and OMS is preferred
  • Experience with configuration management and requirements management systems such as DOORS, JIRA, MKS, or ClearCase is preferred
