Autonomy Student Assistant, Spring 2021 - ELSYS

Atlanta, GA 30303

Job Description

The Electronic Systems Laboratory (ELSYS) is currently seeking a Student Assistant in the Test Engineering Division (TEN) for Spring 2021. While the exploration of under-ice environments in polar regions of our planet can provide valuable information to many fields of science, it proves difficult for humans to gain access to the necessary regions for data collection. The harsh terrain both above and below the several-hundred-meter-thick ice limits the ability to deploy human divers on data collection missions. The use of large unmanned underwater vehicles or manned submarines is burdened by great costs and deployment effort. A small man portable unmanned underwater vehicle would greatly facilitate access to under-ice Polar Regions for scientific exploration. The fields of planetary science, biology, and climate science can all benefit from additional data obtained from beneath the Antarctic ice.

The Nekton unmanned underwater design is currently under development at the Georgia Institute of Technology provides such a solution for an easily deployable vehicle able to undertake missions in harsh under-ice environments with significantly reduced deployment effort. The student will work under the guidance of GTRI researchers performing one or more of the following activities:

Mechanical design (CAD Design)
System engineering
HW fabrication
