Job Description

The Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) is searching for a proven leader with extensive leadership experience for the position of Associate Laboratory Director for Business Development in the Information and Communications Laboratory (ICL). ICL is one of the eight business units of GTRI and conducts research at all levels of information sciences including data collection, sensors, communications, networks, data models, information exchange, trust, application development, advanced computing, algorithms, human factors, analytics, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. Research programs support a wide range of sponsors across national security, health, public safety, State, and industry. ICL currently has over 200 researchers and staff performing over $60M in research per year.

The selected candidate will work with the Laboratory Director to provide senior leadership for the laboratory focused on business development functions and work closely with both the lab and GTRI executive leadership teams. This Associate Laboratory Director position will be responsible for day-to-day business development activities of the laboratory, while also working closely with the Laboratory Director and senior staff to develop and implement a strategy with long term goals for research and personnel growth and innovation, while assuring successful project execution. The Associate Laboratory Director must excel at leadership and delegating tasks, demonstrating exceptional attention to detail, organizational skills, communication skills, and follow-up skills. 

Job Duties

Work with the Lab Director in formulation and tracking of long-term direction and strategy;

In collaboration with lab senior leadership, develop and execute business plans and strategic research initiatives to capture sponsored research in areas of importance to ICL;

Oversee ICL business development functions focused on supporting researchers in finding new sponsors and opportunities, support proposal development, track status of opportunities, mentor young researchers in business development, and report activities to the lab and directorate

Communicate and enforce GTRI and lab policies to ICL staff;

Work with the lab senior leadership team in recruiting new research staff;

Represent the laboratory to sponsors, cultivating relationships and identifying new opportunities;

Develop and sustain strategic relationships with peer leaders across GTRI and Georgia Tech, to include research partnerships with Resident Instruction;

Involvement with GTRI Executive Leadership and other Laboratory Leadership to create and implement GTRI strategies;

Assist and advise the Lab Director and researchers with proposal strategy, proposal review, and bid/no-bid decisions;

Support and enhance innovation across the ICL technical team;

Contribute to sponsored research activities.

25% - 50% travel

Education & Length of Experience

Principal Research Engineer

  • A Masters degree in Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related field of study and eleven (11) years of relevant full-time experience, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related field of study and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • The ideal candidate will have a good mix of demonstrated technical, business development, and strategy leadership experience.
  • 15+ years of experience in applied research organizations which should include experience in DoD and industry research, outreach, and education
  • Successful operational execution of research in alignment with strategic objectives
  • A solid understanding of ICL research areas and markets
  • Strong background facilitating dialogue, collaboration and partnerships between research personnel and government/industry stakeholders
  • Strong track record of research or applied engineering accomplishments, including project/program management and budget oversight
  • Excellent communication skills

 

U.S. Citizenship Requirements

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.

Clearance Type Required

Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain an active security clearance.
