GTRIs Applied Systems Laboratory (ASL) seeks qualified candidates for the position of Associate Laboratory Director.  ASL conducts world-class applied research, development, test & evaluation (RDT&E) of joint integrated air & missile defense and rotary-wing aviation systems for several government agencies located on the U.S. Army Redstone Arsenal near Huntsville, AL.

The Associate Laboratory Director is responsible for supporting the ASL Laboratory Director in the oversight and operations of all ASL activities including management and allocation of ASL budgets and resources; execution of programs and projects assigned to the ASL Directors Office; oversight of sponsor engagement and proposal generation; senior Hiring Manager for the Laboratory; conducting program development aligned with the Laboratorys technical competencies.  The Associate Laboratory Director will work closely with Laboratory Division Chiefs, Chief Scientist, Chief Engineer and Lab Director to execute strategic plans that support Lab goals and the Lab, Directorate and GTRI strategic visions.

Job Purpose

The Associate Lab Director assists the Lab Director in all aspects of the direction and operation of the Laboratory.  The Associate Lab Director is primarily responsible for the ongoing operations of the lab, including oversight of budgets, projects, and resources.  The Associate Lab Director also provides oversight for the administrative functions of the Lab, personnel matters within the Lab, compliance to policies and procedures, and provides the Lab interface to major GTRI support units, including Research Security, Accounting and Finance, Talent Management, and Sponsored Project Support. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensures execution of budget targets and compliance to policies. 
  • Oversees Lab facilities, including facilities improvements decisions, space usage decisions, and overhead budgets.
  • Develops operational plans and other Lab-level plans and documents. 
  • Acts as a Surrogate for the Laboratory Director for meetings and other Laboratory business.
  • Contributes to hiring decisions and assist with the hiring process. 
  • Sustains Labs research enterprise; Identify new funding initiatives and opportunities; Cultivate and create strategic alliances with potential external sponsors.
  • Mentors lab research staff.
  • Facilitates cross-lab solutions to operational issues both through participation in special working groups and in an ad hoc manner.
  • Develops strategies for recruiting and retention.
  • Promotes Labs mission and capabilities to government and industry research sponsors, academic colleagues and peers, and government officials and policymakers.
  • Assists and advises researchers with proposal development and submission as funding opportunities arise.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • 15+ years experience in the development and technical management of air & missile defense or avionics systems.
  • Experience in air & missile defense or avionics research areas such as C2, Fire Control, T&E, avionics integration and systems engineering.
  • Experience in software engineering and systems engineering best practices.
  • Experience with business development, including concept development, engagement strategy, technical briefs and proposal development.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Active DoD Secret clearance
  • Experience facilitating dialogue, collaboration, and partnerships among research personnel, government and industry stakeholders.
  • Experience with contracting, proposals and contract management.
  • M.S. or Ph.D. Degree

Travel Requirements

10% - 25% travel

  • 9 years of related experience with a Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering
    Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science or a related field
  • 7 years of related experience with a Masters degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering
    Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science or a related field
  • 4 years of related experience with a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering
    Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science or a related field

U.S. Citizenship Requirements

Due to our research contracts with the U.S. federal government, candidates for this position must be U.S. Citizens.

Clearance Type Required

Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain an active security clearance.
