The Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has an opening for an Associate Director for Environment, Safety and Health (ES&H). Reporting directly to the Laboratory Deputy Director, the Associate Director serves as a key member of the Laboratory's senior management staff providing oversight and management of all ES&H matters. The Associate Director will collaborate with the programmatic, scientific and operations managers across the Laboratory to deliver ES&H services in a cost-efficient and effective manner. Key objectives of the directorate are to provide environmental, safety and health expertise directly to the workplace; provide ES&H policy necessary to maintain compliance with requirements; and deliver support and ancillary services to the Laboratory's operations. The ES&H Director is responsible for providing management and leadership to a team of ~ 300 professional and support personnel with a budget of ~ $37M. The candidate will serve as a key partner in ensuring successful implementation of the strategy and will represent ES&H to the Board of Governors, the Business and Operations subcommittee and other institutional committees and working groups. This position requires interaction with a broad range of high level internal and external contacts and responding to a variety of formal and informal technical and information requests.

Essential Duties
- Interpret and establish laboratory ES&H requirements and advise LLNL on the necessary and sufficient requirements to assure employee and public safety, including environmental stewardship; ensure ES&H work is performed in a safe, secure cost-effective and compliant manner.
- Establish ES&H strategies, priorities, and policies consistent with LLNL mission; ensure effective integration of ES&H, business management, and compliance policies into all ES&H work.
- Assess the ES&H status of LLNL; manage process to ensure compliance with ES&H contract and regulatory requirements applicable to LLNL.
- Maintain strategic and effective relationship with the customer.
- Commit qualified ES&H resources in fulfillment of LLNL mission; provide technical expertise in preparation, negotiation, and quality maintenance of company ES&H permits and compliance documents.
- Execute ES&H plans and budgets; establish and maintain cost-effective compliant ES&H programs in support of the LLNL mission.
- Ensure ES&H organizational alignment with LLNL mission, vision, and strategy.
- Manage performance in support of LLNL Critical Line Items.
- Ensure consistent deployment of ES&H systems and processes.
- Ensure staff is appropriately mentored in professional development.
- Provide for independent oversight of ES&H activities.
- Assist in the establishment of a strong ES&H awareness for LLNL.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

- Advanced scientific degree or an equivalent level of education and related experience.
- Extensive experience and knowledge in two or more ES&H related fields.
- Exceptional management, technical, administrative, and leadership skills that enable building positive, trust-based relationships.
- Exceptional communication skills necessary to effectively explain, present, negotiate, advise and influence all levels of management.
- Excellent analytical, problem solving and decision making skills necessary to independently interpret, advise, recommend and approve actions and implement solutions.
- Demonstrated organizational, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
- Extensive experience providing performance and salary management, directing and monitoring the work of others.
- Expert knowledge of and experience implementing compliance related aspects of federal, state and DOE regulations and directives.
- Extensive experience responding to internal and external auditors and reviewers.
- Ability to develop effective working relationships with the DOE and other federal agencies.
- Proficiency in staffing, budget management and organizational development.
-Broad experience in applying independent audit techniques to ensure compliances and mission critical deliverables.

Desired Qualifications
- Working knowledge of programs, facilities, and LLNL ES&H policies and practices.
- Experience interacting with senior DOE and NNSA management with a positive end result.

Pre-Placement Medical Exam: A job related pre-placement medical examination may be required.

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, wewill initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if youmeet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note: This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
