Job Description

The Opto-Mechanical (OM) Branch in the Electro-Optical Systems Innovation Division (EOSID) supports the design, modeling, simulation, construction, and integration of high precision optical systems by applying core competencies in optical and mechanical engineering. The OM branch is made up of 10 full-time researchers with backgrounds in optical and mechanical engineering. The Associate Branch Head of the OM Branch is tasked with assisting the OM Branch Head in the supervision of the branch's programs and researchers.
EOSID specializes in the complete imaging and remote sensing chain, from the analysis, design, development, integration, test, and evaluation of sensing systems, to the processing, exploitation, and visualization of data and imagery. EOSID also specializes in modeling and simulation (M&S) of high-energy laser propagation, engagements, and effects.

Job Duties

  • Assist the branch head to oversee and manage branch budgets, resources, and compliance with institute policies and procedures
  • Assist the branch head to oversee and manage sponsored research in the branch to ensure execution of successful research programs based on sponsor requirements
  • Support branch operations and coordination across branches within the division and other laboratories of GTRI
  • Establish, maintain and evolve the strategic vision and execution plan for the branch to enhance sponsored project portfolios and technical capabilities
  • Train and mentor branch members including research faculty and both undergraduate and graduate students, to develop expertise in electro-optical and electro-mechanical applications including facilitating the publication of novel research activities, professional development, and training opportunities
  • Direct business development activities to include: sponsor engagement, showcasing branch capabilities to internal and external organizations, support sponsor tours, visits, and technical meetings
  • Oversee, author, and contribute to proposals and white papers for sustained branch growth
  • Conduct administrative actions including the recruitment, hiring, and termination of branch personnel, execution of performance appraisals, development and execution of performance improvement plans, and review and approval of employee timesheets
  • Represent the division and laboratory as a subject matter expert at consortium's, symposiums, and expositions
  • Ensure that all technical work is performed and documented to organizational and sponsor standards based on project requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Travel Requirements

10% - 25% travel

Education & Length of Experience

Senior Research Engineer/Scientist

  • A Masters degree in Optical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Physics, or a related field and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Masters degree in Optical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Physics, or a related field and nine (9) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelors degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Optical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Physics, or a related field and four (4) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor's degree.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience in program development and leadership of sponsored research projects
  • Experience in the design, development, and integration of electro-optical sensor systems

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience capturing, managing, and executing large sponsored programs involving the development of prototype systems
  • Experience managing personnel

U.S. Citizenship Requirements

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.

Clearance Type Required

Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain an active security clearance.
