We have an opening for an Associate Biological Safety Professional in the Environment, Safety and Health (ES&H) Directorate to perform broadly defined assignments working under the direction of the Laboratorys biosafety program subject-matter expert (SME) within the Worker Safety and Health Functional Area. You will assist the Biosafety Program SME in ensuring the biosafety program at LLNL is comprehensive and compliant and provide support and guidance in the area of biosafety. You will interact with all levels of personnel throughout LLNL as well as outside agencies such as the Department of Energy (DOE), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and other DOE contractor facilities. You will serve as an Alternate Responsible Official (ARO) for the LLNL Select Agent Program.
This position will be filled at either a TSS.2 or TSS.3 level depending on your qualifications.Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.
Essential Duties
- Perform moderate to complex program analyses and assessments to identify potential biosafety issues and recommend improvements and processes.
- Conduct periodic inspections of BSL-1/ABSL-1, BSL-2/ABSL-2, and BSL-3/ABSL-3 laboratories to identify and evaluate potential hazards and assess compliance with federal, state and local regulations.
- Participate in the development and presentation of formal classroom training in biological safety and animal biosafety.
- Review and interpret new, revised and established regulatory standards and surveys related to biological safety and controls to ensure compliance and the safety of Laboratory personnel.
- Review and update the biological safety sections of the Environment Safety and Health (ES&H) Manual and other technical documents.
- Back up the biosafety program SME as a representative of the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC), Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), Biogovernance Committee and other committees as appropriate.
- Support the IBC and IACUC committees, including assisting research personnel in developing protocols, performing designated member reviews and committee pre-reviews of both IBC and IACUC protocols to facilitate efficient IBC and IACUC meetings and ensure consistency among project protocols.
- Serve as a planning team member for the development of work control documents (WCDs) involving biological agents and materials, ensure controls in the WCD are compliant with federal, state and local regulations, and perform cross-checks of the WCDs with applicable IBC and IACUC protocols to ensure congruency.

In Addition at the TSS.3 Level
- Independently conduct periodic program reviews and assessments of the biosafety program; prepare reports, documenting findings and recommendations.
- Independently develop and present formal classroom training in biological safety.
- Independently evaluate and perform risk assessments on research and process proposals to determine risks associated with the use of biological materials and animals and define appropriate biosafety controls.
- Bachelors degree in Microbiology, Virology, Immunology, Pathology, Molecular/Cellular Biology, or related field or equivalent combination of education and relevant previous experience.
- Experience in biological research or Biosafety or a combination of the two.
- Knowledge of general biological laboratory operations, microbiological techniques or biosafety containment concepts.
- Familiar with relevant biosafety regulations, standards and policies [e.g., Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories, 5th Edition, National Institutes of Health (NIH) Guidelines, Federal Select Agent Regulations].
- Effective communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills necessary to effectively present, explain and communicate complex technical information to all levels of personnel and management internal and external to the Laboratory.
- Effective and efficient organizational skills to coordinate multiple and frequently conflicting, concurrent tasks, with good follow-through.
- Ability to maintain meticulous records (e.g., to document compliance with regulatory requirements).
- Ability to acquire and maintain a Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)/Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) clearance for access to select agents and the ability to become medically qualified to wear respiratory and other protective equipment.
In Addition at the TSS.3 Level
- Masters degree in Microbiology, Virology, Immunology, Pathology, Molecular/Cellular Biology, or related field or equivalent level of demonstrated knowledge and relevant previous experience.
- Ability to apply biosafety principles, theories and concepts to provide creative solutions to complex technical problems or unique operations involving biological materials.
- Ability to independently develop, manage and present formal training courses.
Desired Qualifications
- Ph.D. Degree in Microbiology, Virology, Immunology, Pathology, Molecular/Cellular Biology, or related field.
- Previous research experience at the BSL-3 or ABSL-3 containment level, experience working in a Select Agent Program or experience in the role of Responsible Official (RO) or Alternate RO.
- Knowledge of federal and state-level import/transport permits [e.g., CDC Import Permit Program (IPP), USDA import/transport permit programs (e.g., PPQ, VS, BRS)].

Pre-Placement Medical Exam: A job related pre-placement medical examination may be required.

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, wewill initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if youmeet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.
