As one of the largest technical universities in Germany, Technical University of Darmstadt is dedicated to questions of artificial intelligence at the highest scientific level. Among other things, it is a founding member and provides the headquarters for the Hessian Centre for Artificial Intelligence. The engineering faculties are concentrating on questions of innovative hardware implementations of AI systems and on questions of theories, methods and applications in the engineering sciences and are currently intensifying their activities in this area in research and teaching. In this context, Technical University of Darmstadt is advertising a total of two professorships in the context of AI in the engineering sciences with this professorship.

The Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology at Technical University of Darmstadt is seeking to fill a professorship in the context of the Federal-Länder Programme for the promotion of junior academics as

as soon as possible. The position is initially limited to six years.

We are looking for an outstanding junior scientist who has done excellent work in a field of research dedicated to the design of hardware related to artificial intelligence. Possible topics in this context are:

  • Neuromorphic Computing on an analog basis using Memristors, Flash Cells or other analog configurable elements
  • Analog and digital hardware concepts and realizations for Spiking Neural Networks
  • In-Memory or Near-Memory Computing
  • Hardware concepts and realizations for reduced-precision/approximate/stochastic computing
  • Arithmetics in alternative number representations (Logarithmic Number Scale)
  • Innovative hardware architectures for AI applications (e.g. probabilistic circuits)

In addition to a focus on one of the mentioned topics, the department is also open for alternative orientations, as long as they explicitly refer to hardware issues in the context of Artificial Intelligence. Teaching and research should also be related to the profile of the department and thus to at least one of the focus areas Networked Systems, Energy and Biomedical Engineering or the basic area Novel Component and System Concepts (details: Applicants are asked to outline the relevant points of reference in their application documents and to demonstrate the potential of their research and teaching for strengthening the above-mentioned areas.

Applicants must have successfully completed a university degree, excellent doctoral degree and should be able to present further independent and innovative contributions to research and teaching in at least one of the above-mentioned areas. A clear international and interdisciplinary orientation should be evident from their scientific profile.

The assistant professorship is designated as a qualification professorship according to § 64 HHG (Hessisches Hochschulgesetz); it is initially financed as part of a joint federal and state program for the promotion of junior researchers (, whose regulations it also adheres to. Accordingly, the maximum period of scientific activities after the PhD degree should not exceed four years.

Remuneration follows the German W-Besoldung at level W2 Hessisches Besoldungsgesetz. The position is initially limited to six years. The position comes with the option of a tenured professorship after a successfully completed tenure process. The tenure process, which can be initiated one and a half years before the end of the assistant professorship, evaluates the corresponding achievements in research and teaching.
