This is a 9-month tenure-accruing position that will be 40% research and 60% teaching in the Agricultural and Biological Engineering Department (ABE), Institute of Food and Sciences (IFAS). This assignment may change in accordance with the needs of the unit.


The food market is consumer-driven, and dynamic engineering solutions are required that meet current needs without impacting human and environmental health at all scales. The next generation of food engineers must shift from a singular focus on mass production to a new paradigm focused on convergent advances in technology, consumer needs, and the human-artificial intelligence (AI) interface. State of the art food engineering research programs should balance federal/industrial funding with the aim of enhancing technology translation for enhancing food security/sovereignty.


The faculty member in this position will be responsible for building a research and teaching program that addresses engineering issues at the forefront of food systems. Food security and sovereignty are dynamic pillars of food systems, and this position will train future professionals and develop state of the art engineering solutions on complex problems at the food/energy/water/climate nexus. Candidates should have demonstrated knowledge and expertise in food systems and a strong background in food engineering, biological engineering, or a related discipline. Applicants should demonstrate how their proposed research/teaching program can train a new workforce focused on convergence of technology, consumer needs, the human-AI interface, and/or other emerging frontiers.


The successful candidate is expected to create an innovative teaching and research program that addresses at least one of the following areas: food process engineering, nutrigenomics, food nanotechnology, precision nutrition, shelf-life and safety of food products, or food/energy/water system nexus issues. Candidates will apply engineering principles to understand the impact of processes on structural-functional changes in foods or food ingredients and explore new technologies that enhance food quality, preserve nutrients and ensure food safety. Successful applicants will direct graduate student research, establish a strong publication record, attract federal and industrial extramural funding, participate in multidisciplinary teams, and work with industry to develop new partnerships that enhance technology translation. The ability to collaborate in multidisciplinary teams associated with existing departments such as UF/IFAS Food Science and Human Nutrition, and institutes such as the Institute for Sustainable Food Systems (ISFS), Multi-Functional Integrated System Technology (MIST), or other existing research institutes within the University of Florida is expected.


Because of the IFAS land-grant mission, all faculty are expected to be supportive of and engaged in all three mission areas—Research, Teaching and Extension—regardless of the assignment

split specified in the position description.

IFAS, one of the nation’s largest agricultural and natural resources research and education organizations, is administered by a Senior Vice President and four deans: the Dean of the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, the Dean for Extension and Director of the Florida Cooperative Extension Service, the Dean for Research and Director of the Florida Agricultural Experiment Station, and the Dean for the College of Veterinary Medicine. UF/IFAS also engages in cooperative work with Florida A&M University in Tallahassee.

Required: A Ph.D. (doctorate foreign equivalent is acceptable) in Food Engineering, Agricultural and Biological Engineering, or closely related engineering field is required. Demonstrated knowledge and expertise in food engineering, food science, chemistry, microbiology, food engineering or related engineering field is also required. Skills and experience teaching engineering curriculum are greatly desired. The ability to work effectively in an interdisciplinary manner with faculty from departments outside the incumbent’s home academic unit is essential. Preferred: Knowledge and experience with new trends and techniques are desirable. Postdoctoral and other professional experience including teaching experience are highly desirable. Experience or familiarity with international research/teaching activities are of particular importance.
