Assistant or Associate Director for External Workforce Development

The College of Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign seeks applicants for an Assistant or Associate Director for External Workforce Development with initial emphasis in the areas of cybersecurity, software development, data analytics, and technology innovation. The Assistant/Associate Director will assist units in the College of Engineering with implementing and maintaining revenue-generating programs that deliver professional and executive training and related consulting services to external clients, including corporations, government agencies, and other organizations. The Assistant/Associate Director will coordinate closely with the Office of Corporate Relations and Research, the Center for Professional and Executive Training and Education, and the Office of Marketing and Communications to ensure that such programs are designed to meet the needs of potential clients and marketed effectively. The Assistant/Associate Director will report to the Associate Dean for Graduate, Professional and Online Programs, who reports to the Dean of the College of Engineering.

Specific duties and responsibilities include the following, but may vary depending on position level. Individuals at the higher, Associate Director, level will be expected to serve as a lead in these areas.

  • Assist with identifying opportunities for generating excess revenue through external workforce development and related consulting services offered to corporations, government agencies, and other organizations across all of the technical disciplines represented in the College of Engineering.
  • Assist with managing external client relationships to ensure a high degree of responsiveness and excellence in performance and execution.
  • Assist with coordinating the organization and delivery of external workforce development programs and related consulting services.
  • Assist with developing print, video, and web-based marketing material and holding outreach and networking events for promoting workforce development programs and related consulting services to external clients.
  • Maintain effective internal lines of communication to ensure that available resources and opportunities are widely disseminated and leveraged. This includes assisting with the production of annual reports and presentations to College administrators and unit heads.
  • Oversee the implementation of a standard cost structure for external workforce development programs and related consulting services in consultation with College leadership; coordinate the efforts with College and non-College units.
  • Work with appropriate teams to develop and implement processes and tools for effective and timely management, tracking, and internal reporting of program activities/schedule/budget.
  • Some travel required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR ASSISTANT DIRECTOR

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a technology, business or related field.
  • 3 years of experience in project management including budget responsibility.
  • Strong proficiency in all forms of communication and experience working successfully in diverse teams.
  • Proven ability to perform and prioritize multiple tasks with excellent attention to detail.
  • Proven ability to use independent judgment to identify issues and propose solutions.
  • Familiarity with relevant technical concepts, such as cybersecurity, software development, data analytics, or technology innovation.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite and productivity tools.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master's degree in a technology-related field.
  • Excellence in technical writing and technical oral communication.
  • Proven ability to balance customer-service, administrative, and financial responsibilities.
  • Experience with developing and managing client relationships.
  • Experience working with professional training and workforce development.
  • Experience working with large federal government entities and/or technology corporations.
  • Proficiency with web authoring or content management tools (e.g., Dreamweaver, Drupal).

 

QUALIFICATIONS FOR ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a technology, business or related field.
  • 3 years of experience in program management, with planning, administration, and budget responsibility for multiple simultaneous projects including some related to workforce development.
  • Strong proficiency in all forms of communication and experience working successfully in diverse teams.
  • Proven ability to perform and prioritize multiple tasks with excellent attention to detail.
  • Strong leadership skills that reflect ability to use independent judgment and decision making to proactively identify issues and propose and implement solutions.
  • Working knowledge of relevant technical concepts, such as cybersecurity, software development, data analytics, or technology innovation.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite and productivity tools, as well as project management and budgeting tools (e.g. Microsoft Project, Wrike, Basecamp, Trello, Teamwork Projects).

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master's degree in a technology-related field.
  • Excellence in technical writing and technical oral communication across multiple disciplines.
  • Proven ability to balance customer-service, administrative, and financial responsibilities.
  • Experience with developing and managing client relationships in multiple technical sectors.
  • Experience working in an academic research environment.
  • Experience with developing scalable business models and associated cost structures.
  • Experience working with large federal government entities and/or technology corporations.
  • Proficiency with web authoring and content management tools (e.g., Dreamweaver, Drupal).

This is a full-time, benefits-eligible academic professional position appointed on a 12-month service basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the closing date. Salary and position level are commensurate with experience and qualifications.
