Application Engineer I - Automation

Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) seeks a dedicated individual to join our team as an Application Engineer in our Irvine, California office. As an SEL Application Engineer, you will be a product expert, supporting the product as well as providing tools and resources for training and teaching others how our products best serve the industry. If you are looking for an opportunity to apply your knowledge of automation areas like DNP, IEC 61850, Modbus, and Networking to troubleshoot and solve real world issues, while continuing to learn and develop in this field, then this is the position for you!

Automation = software, integration and automation, industrial controls, PLCs, industry protocols (IEC-61850, DNP, Modbus), Ethernet systems, protocol analyzers, and industry SCADA practices.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
1. Maintain and improve knowledge of power systems, automation, and all related SEL products.
2. Help customers apply SEL products through visits, demonstrations, training courses and telephone contact.
3. Contribute to product specifications, application and testing software, and literature.
4. Participate in SEL marketing and sales activities and industry technical meetings and conferences.
5. Teach in training schools for customers and SEL personnel.
6. Maintain customer database for customer application and quality information.
7. Continuously identify, measure, follow, and improve marketing, sales, and engineering quality procedures.
8. Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
B.S. in Electrical Engineering, equivalent degree, or equivalent work experience
3 years experience in power systems, industry practices, and focus area*
Completion of SEL Engineering Development Program or equivalent work experience
Proven technical training, speaking, writing, and customer service skills
Ability to direct daily work activities with general supervision
Ability to travel
Strong writing, documentation, and speaking skills
Ability to learn new skills and assume new responsibilities
Ability to work cooperatively in a team environment
Background check results satisfactory to SEL
Negative drug test result(s)

Preferred Qualifications
M.S. in Electrical Engineering, with emphasis in focus area*
Published application guides
Experience using SEL products
