Job Description

The Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) in Atlanta, GA is searching for antenna and radar engineers/scientists to join the Antenna Systems Division (ASD) of the Sensors and Electromagnetic Applications Laboratory (SEAL). The research areas of the division include phased array antenna systems, electromagnetic modeling and simulation, antenna test and measurement, high power microwave directed energy systems, and monolithic microwave integrated circuits (MMIC). The position is based in Smyrna, GA at Georgia Tech's Cobb County Research Facility (CCRF). Some travel may be required in meeting and presenting research to customers, developing business, and experimenting/demonstrating prototype systems and technology. We value bright and intellectually curious professionals and provide a work environment that allows work/life balance and opportunity. The phased array antenna system research area includes activities in:
- Design and development of highly integrated active phased array antenna systems,
- Independent technical assessment of phased array systems, including foreign threat systems,
- Development of next generation digital beamforming hardware and techniques

The electromagnetic modeling and research area includes activities in:
- Antenna performance as installed on platforms (using FEKO),
- Radar Cross Section (RCS) modeling and predictions (using XPATCH),
- Development of large-scaled phased array antenna models using MATLAB,
- EMI/EMC analysis

The antenna test and calibration research area includes activities in:
- Near-field and Far-Field antenna range testing techniques from VHF to W-Band,
- Antenna range calibration techniques,
- Calibration techniques for highly integrated active phased array antennas,
- EMI/EMC testing techniques

The high power microwave research area includes activities in:
- Independent technical assessment of HPM systems,
- Electromagnetic Theory and Phenomenology,
- Advancing the state of the art in HPM technology

The MMIC research area includes activities in:
- Research and development in next generation integrated circuits for active antennas,
- RF and digital circuit integration using silicon germanium and related semiconductors
- High power amplifier design with GaN, GAs or other semiconductors

Job Duties

  • Supporting externally sponsored as well as internal research and development projects
  • Designing and developing novel component technology to support antenna and phased-array systems
  • Performing high-fidelity modeling and simulation of antennas and their performance within radar systems
  • Testing and evaluating electromagnetic performance of antennas and supporting components
  • Evaluating the impact of high power microwave systems and countermeasures
  • Prototyping phased-array antennas
  • Assessing foreign phased-array radar systems

Education & Length of Experience

Research Engineer/Scientist I

  • A Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, or a related field of study.

Research Engineer/Scientist II

  • A Masters degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, or a related field of study and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Masters degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, or a related field of study and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelors degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, or a related field of study.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Candidates currently enrolled in an accredited Bachelor's degree program relevant to this position will be considered
  • Background/experience in at least one of the following areas:
    • Array performance modeling using Matlab, Simulink, HFSS, FEKO, CST, or similar
    • Electromagnetic modeling of antennas using HFSS, FEKO, or similar
    • Testing and measurement of RF devices and antennas
    • Modeling of HPM effects using Simulink or similar
    • Schematic capture and RF PCB layout using Altium or similar
    • Expertise in electromagnetic theory, phased array antenna theory, digital beamforming, or adaptive signal processing

Preferred Qualifications

  • Background/experience in more than one of the areas in Minimum Required Qualifications

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.

Ability to obtain Secret Clearance upon hire
