Job Description

GTRIs Cooperative Education (co-op) program offers you extensive opportunities to participate in diverse scientific and technological endeavors, use state-of-the-art equipment and rapidly improve your technical and leadership skills. The program allows you to alternate three semesters of full-time work at GTRI with semesters of full-time school.

The Electronic Systems Laboratory (ELSYS) currently seeks Co-op/Intern students in the Test Engineering Division (TEN), Strategic Sustainment Team (SST) starting the fall 2021 semester.

SSTs vision is to advance academic, industry, and government collaborations to deliver transformational change for sustainment stakeholders through innovation and experimentation. As an SST aircraft sustainment researcher, you will be part of a multi-disciplinary team working with academia, industry, and the Department of Defense (DoD) in order to provide novel approaches to solve complex aircraft sustainment process challenges. Employing continuous process improvement practices, you will learn the customer's processes, culture, and information technology (IT) limitations in order to recommend solutions that will improve enterprise-level aircraft sustainment.

SSTs broad range of research will provide a solid foundation for the student as a future project manager/engineer. The student will work under the guidance of GTRI researchers performing the following:

Research and analyze processes, organizational culture, and IT infrastructure related to the sustainment and maintenance of commercial and DoD aircraft
Research and define capabilities, processes, and technical gaps as they relate to aircraft readiness and sustainment
Support aircraft sustainment and process improvement projects to assist in developing sponsor relationships and build on future opportunities
Participate in technical meetings with sponsors and industry collaborators serving as the subject matter expert for aircraft maintenance, logistics, and/or sustainment processes when required

Required Minimum Qualifications

Pursuing a Bachelors degree in Industrial, Systems, or Aerospace Engineering
Must have a 3.0 or higher GPA
Must be registered for co-op credit with your university (Co-op only)

3.0 or higher cumulative GPA
Must commit to a single semester full-time internship.  The work term is August 2021- December 2021

Preferred Qualifications

Ability to perform research independently
Ability to prioritize tasks while working on multiple projects
Ability to communicate technical and non-technical information effectively and efficiently using verbal, written, or collaborative means
Ability to learn and apply continuous process improvement methodologies including:
      Theory of Constraints
      Six Sigma
Ability to learn and apply project management and product development techniques such as agile
Ability to perform basic data analytics, modeling and simulation, and optimization in support of research
Ability to learn aircraft maintenance, supply chain, and logistics operations

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.

Clearance Type Required

Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret Clearance upon hire
