Whole Life Engineering (WLE) is responsible for ensuring our products are Safe, Reliable, Maintainable, and delivered on time. WLE consists of multiple disciplines that support engineering, our program offices and our customers. Our WLE disciplines participate in the total life cycle of our products from conception to deactivation. Our focus area is product support, including the following disciplines: Reliability System Safety and Supportability.

Job Summary:

We have an immediate need for an Affordability Engineer to join our Whole Life Engineering team. In this role, youre responsible for the development, management and coordination of cost management efforts for the life of the system. In addition, youll provide leadership in Cost as a Requirement (CaaR), Design to Cost (DTC) and Life Cycle Cost (LCC).

Responsibilities to Anticipate:
  • Evaluating early trades that look to balance cost in order to deliver additional performance.
  • Routinely monitoring CaaR (Cost as a Requirement) as a key parameter for the program.
  • Working closely with Engineering, Supply Chain, Quality & Mission Assurance and Operations to incorporate design elements early in the program lifecycle in order to optimize costs across the program value stream.
  • Developing basic Design to Unit Production (DTUPC) cost models that can be matured and refined with the program.
  • Creating a should cost framework in parallel with Price to Win to more effectively characterize program risk and opportunities to identify opportunities for earlier mitigation and capture.
  • For programs with multiple facets including fielding and sustainment, driving for early understanding and trade space associated with total life costs beyond just the system design/procurement cost.
  • Using EVMS and early indicator metrics to identify and address adverse trends.

Infrequent Travel (less than 5% required)

An advanced degree in a related field and minimum 3 years experience may be considered for this role.

Qualifications You Must Have:
Education: Bachelor's degree OR 8+ years of relevant professional experience may be considered in lieu of a Bachelors degree. (Two years of related work experience can substitute for one year of college education)
Employment Experience:
  • 5+ years of experience in Manufacturing Operations, Supply Chain, Engineering, or Finance
  • Experience with cost schedule management tools, for example:
    • Integrated Master Schedule (IMS)
    • Earned Value Management System (EVMS)
    • Work breakdown structure
    • Integrated Product Development (IPD) systems
    • Experience integrating project cost, schedule, risk and progress
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a US security clearance. US citizenship is required as only US citizens are eligible for a security clearance.
Qualifications We Value:
  • Experience with one or more of the following: Cost as A requirement, Design to Unit Production Cost modelling, should cost parametric modeling, Total Ownership Cost (TOC) modeling,
  • Experience with Cost As Independent Variable (CAIV) OR Life Cycle Cost (LCC) concepts and processes
  • Experience with any cost engineering processes and tools to include Enterprise Cost Model (ECM), ACEIT, SEER, and PriceSystems Tools
  • Demonstrated financial business knowledge
  • Demonstrated experience establishing and maintaining good working relationship with all levels of the organization, including customers, and supporting functional organizations
  • General knowledge of aerospace /defense products and systems technologies
  • Six Sigma working knowledge
  • Experience and knowledge of Object oriented databases
  • Working knowledge of generation breakdowns, bills of material, part lists, work breakdown structures, or similar assemblies
  • Demonstrated knowledge of manufacturing environment including supply chain processes
  • Demonstrated verbal and written presentation skills
  • Advanced degrees (MS/MA/PhD are a plus
