Aeromechanical Research Engineer - ATAS

Job Description

The Rocketry and Flight Instrumentation Branch (RFIB) of the ATAS Aerospace and Acoustics Technologies Division (AATD) is searching for an experienced Aerospace Engineer with a background in aerospace and mechanical engineering hardware/algorithm development to work on several ongoing DoD/non-DoD sponsored programs. Programs will also include supporting the Bio-sensing and Signal Analytics Branch on relevant programs in acoustic and hardware development, prototyping, bench testing and performance analysis tasks.

Primary roles and responsibilities include supporting hardware development for flight vehicles and wearable sensing systems, interfacing with flight vehicle researchers (i.e., manned fixed wing, rotor-craft, UAS, and rockets) regarding digital flight instrumentation techniques, and helping develop Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems for flight test deployment.

Additional job duties may include periodic support of aerospace testing activities (field testing and onsite facility testing), basic signal processing, mechanical design/prototyping/fabrication, and interfacing with programmatic government personnel. The desired candidate should also be familiar with the peer review publishing process and proposal writing, capable of literature reviews and technical writing for publications, working in a laboratory environment, and comfortable with technical interfacing with both sponsors and colleagues.

Job Duties

  • Develop Python and Matlab analytical algorithms to integrate ML/AI results with commercial software packages (such as RCAS, Helios, or Kestral) and GTRI proprietary analytical models
  • V&V model results with relevant measured flight data and characterize performance (rocket trajectories, rotorcraft flight maneuvers, etc)
  • Familiarity with aerospace Condition Based Maintenance (CBM) or Predictive Maintenance methods preferred
  • Occasionally support aerospace testing as needed (flight testing, data acquisition, etc.)
  • Oversee wearable hardware development of sensing prototypes
  • Technical writing for proposals, deliverables, and peer reviewed publications
  • Communication and networking with research colleagues, sponsor interactions, and academic collaboration
  • Payload design and prototyping of conceptual flight systems (i.e., UxV payloads, onboard avionics, electronic systems housings)
  • Supporting missile, launch vehicle, and other rocket propulsion system instrumentation, testing, analysis, and hardware design

Education & Length of Experience

Research Engineer/Scientist I

  • A Bachelor's degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or an engineering degree in a related field of study.

Research Engineer/Scientist II

  • A Masters degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or an engineering degree in a related field of study and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Masters degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or an engineering degree in a related field of study and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelors degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or an engineering degree in a related field of study.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Candidates currently enrolled in an accredited Bachelors degree program relevant to this position will be considered. Candidate must have a graduation date of no later than May, 2020
  • MS or higher degree in Aerospace, Mechanical, or similar appropriate field
  • 1-3 years of experience in an applied research environment
  • Expertise in Solidworks, Matlab, Python, and git
  • Familiarity with code development standards, version control methods, and software documentation
  • Expertise in hardware development (bench testing, overseeing prototype production, mechanical design)
  • Familiarity with fundamental T&E skillset (such as sensors and instrumentation, data acquisition/analysis, and core signal processing skills)
  • Capability for contribution in both individual and team research programs
  • Strong communication, technical writing, and analytical problem solving skills

  • Active clearance preferred
