Aeromechanical Engineer - ATAS

Job Description

The Rocketry and Flight Instrumentation Branch (RFIB) of the ATAS Aerospace and Acoustics Technologies Division (AATD) is searching for an experienced Aerospace/Mechanical Engineer or Data Scientist with a background in in-flight data curation, machine learning, and data collection for aerospace vehicles to work on several ongoing DoD/non-DoD sponsored programs.

Primary roles include supporting research aimed to improve aircraft readiness using cutting-edge AI/ML techniques and optimization of maintenance aircraft procedures. Secondary roles also include supporting algorithm development in MATLAB and python, conducting literature reviews, and interfacing between aeromechanical test engineers and data scientists.

Job Duties

  • Develop Python and Matlab analytical algorithms to integrate ML/AI results with commercial software packages (such as SysML or SolidWorks), Government Open Architecture Codes, and GTRI proprietary analytical models
  • V&V model results with relevant measured flight data and characterize performance (rocket trajectories, rotorcraft flight maneuvers, etc)
  • Familiarity with aerospace flight vehicle onboard sensing, data acquisition, and post-flight assessment techniques
  • Occasionally support aerospace testing as needed (flight testing, data acquisition, etc.)
  • Technical writing for proposals, deliverables, and peer-reviewed publications
  • Communication and networking with research colleagues, sponsor interactions, and academic collaboration

Additional job duties may include periodic support of aerospace testing activities (field testing and on-site facility testing), basic signal processing, and interfacing with programmatic government personnel. The desired candidate should be familiar with the peer-review publishing process and experience in proposal writing, working in a laboratory environment, and comfortable with technical engagement with sponsors and colleagues.

Education & Length of Experience

Research Engineer/Scientist I

  • A Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Aerospace Engineering, Data Science, Computer Science, or a related field of study.

Research Engineer/Scientist II

  • A Masters degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Aerospace Engineering, Data Science, Computer Science, or a related field of study and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Masters degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Aerospace Engineering, Data Science, Computer Science, or a related field of study and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelors degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Aerospace Engineering, Data Science, Computer Science, or a related field of study.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Masters degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Aerospace Engineering, Data Science, Computer Science, or a related field of study is required for consideration
  • Candidates currently enrolled in an accredited Master's degree program relevant to this position will be considered. Candidate must have a graduation date of no later than August 2021
  • Strong technical understanding of aeromechanical fundamentals
  • Additionally, the candidate should be familiar with state-of-the-art AI/ML as applied to active systems, and assessing critical flight metrics using measured flight data. 
  • Expertise in Solidworks, Matlab, Python, and git
  • Familiarity with code development standards, version control methods, and software documentation
  • Familiarity with fundamental T&E skillset (such as sensors and instrumentation, data acquisition/analysis, and core signal processing skills)
  • Capability for contribution in both individual and team research programs
  • Strong communication, technical writing, and analytical problem-solving skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Active DoD clearance is strongly preferred

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.

Clearance Type Required

Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain an active security clearance.
