Job Description

The Advanced Aviation Systems Engineer is a research faculty position in the Aviation Systems Division (ASD) of Applied Systems Laboratory (ASL) supporting the Program Executive Office (PEO) Aviation sponsored research in Huntsville, AL. This position will support the development of safety-critical avionics and aircraft architectures that meet DO-178C airworthiness and security requirements in various Army efforts, including Air-Ground Networking Radio, Blue Force Tracking, Degraded Visual Environment, and the Improved Data Modem.

Job Duties

  • Support system integration and software development projects for the Department of Defense aircraft system improvement programs.
  • Coordinate system development tasks to include design, integration, and formal testing.
  • Use system specifications and interface descriptions for integration into an aircraft system of systems.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for system architectural framework, methods, and tools.
  • Ensure that technical work is performed to appropriate professional standards and that technical requirements are met.
  • Manage and document system configurations and key interfaces.
  • Manage reports of system deficiencies, develop verification plans, and define test vectors for verification and validation.
  • Utilize model-based systems engineering and modular open systems approach to develop and refine system architectures, requirements, and designs.
  • Interface with Army sponsor organizations and their leaders to develop research portfolios to meeting sponsors' evolving needs
  • Apply modular open systems approaches (MOSA) to Army aviation research efforts

Travel Requirements

25% - 50% travel

Remote and telework are allowable for this position; however, 25% travel is necessary (up to 50% in some cases), with frequent in-person meetings and events in Huntsville anticipated and required.

Education & Length of Experience

Research Engineer/Scientist II

  • A Masters degree in Aerospace, Computer, Electrical, Software, or Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, Avionics, or related field and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Masters degree in Aerospace, Computer, Electrical, Software, or Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, Avionics, or related field and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelors degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Aerospace, Computer, Electrical, Software, or Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, Avionics, or related field.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • 5+ years prior experience
  • Experience in hardware, software, and firmware development methodologies and structured approaches to system development.
  • Strong coordination, organization, teaming, and communication abilities
  • Experience with aircraft, missile systems, and/or spacecraft
  • Experience with avionics systems and safety-critical computer hardware and software
  • Works well individually or in a group setting
  • Ability to work under pressure and time constraints
  • Successfully presents technical information

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with military avionics and sensor networks including 1553 data bus, ARINC-429, Ethernet, and serial interfaces
  • Experience with aviation airworthiness standards, including MIL-STD-882, AR385-10, and DO-178
  • Knowledge of or experience with open system architecture such as FACE, HOST, MOSA, SOSA, and/or CMOSS
  • Experience with system engineering tools (such as SysML, Magic Draw, EA, etc.) and configuration/requirements management systems (such as DOORS, JIRA, MKS, or ClearCase)
  • Familiarity using scripting languages for data analysis (Perl, Ruby, C++, Matlab, or Python)
  • Effectively work in small teams of GTRI and government members.
  • Develop presentation materials and experience leading integrated product teams and/or technical program management review meetings with sponsor organizations
  • An active security clearance is preferred.
  • Experience with defense acquisition programs, including DoD Instruction 5000.2 acquisition programs
