We have multiple openings for Additive Manufacturing Process Engineers to understand, interpret, communicate and deliver engineering services for research and development programs involving engineering design, assembly, and documentation within our Additive Manufacturing Group. The scope of the work will include operation and analysis of additive manufacturing equipment and manufacturing process development, analysis, and expansion. You will apply fundamental engineering principles to provide technical expertise to identify and solve technical problems while abiding by appropriate safe work methods. These positions are in the Materials Engineering Division (MED) within the Engineering Directorate. Essential Duties
- Gather, create, and understand additive manufacturing engineering requirements and interpret technical design drawings for components to gain a strong understanding of manufacturing and design requirements.
- Initialize, modify and finalize machine parameter and control settings, including for motion and sensing systems and associated data collection methods, and understand and execute design and toolpath generation processes.
- Setup and operate multiple custom additive manufacturing platforms in parallel, which include motion systems, tooling, sensors and auxiliary equipment while ensuring correct and repeatable process setup and monitoring for successful component production.
- Perform root cause analysis and identify potential issues in additive manufacturing processes by applying knowledge of materials, engineering, manufacturing, and process controls and monitoring to quickly come to successful resolution.
- Make recommendations for and carry out process improvements to achieve better reproducibility and efficiencies. Examples include improving selection, preparation and handling of materials, improvement of hardware and software, enhancement of overall printing process and post-processing, and improvement of characterization approaches and procedures.
- Maintain troubleshooting, maintenance, process, procedure and component documentation, and offer and execute on recommendations for improvements. Provide input on resolution of technical issues as they arise, and aid in continued technology development for future R&D project growth.
- Prioritize and schedule additive manufacturing work assignments to meet tight manufacturing project deadlines. Possess excellent communication skills and thrive in a multidisciplinary environment within a fast-paced project schedule with challenging milestones and deliverables.
- Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in mechanical, industrial, manufacturing, or materials engineering or related field or the equivalent combination of education and prior relevant experience.
- Fundamental knowledge needed to create, understand and interpret technical drawings and engineering analyses.
- Experience with setup and operation of advanced motion systems machines and/or sensor instrumentation including how to run associated software programs. Experience with basic hand tool operation.
- Skills and experience in identifying and resolving technical issues and making recommendations and executing on process improvements with motion systems machines and/or sensor instrumentation.
- Knowledge of office computer software, including word processing and spreadsheets.
- Sufficient written and verbal communication including hands on experience with work process documentation.
- Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills including the ability to work effectively with all levels of management, technical, engineering, and scientific staff.
- Ability to work in an environment requiring attention to detail, coupled with a high level of multitasking and prioritization required to meet strict deadlines. Desired Qualifications
- Experience operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting additive manufacturing and 3D printing equipment.
- Experience operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting Computer Numerical Control (CNC) equipment, including understanding and writing machine tool code.

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, wewill initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if youmeet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.
