Job Description

The Sensors and Electromagnetic Applications Laboratory (SEAL) is seeking an enthusiastic and technically qualified candidate to fill a full-time, permanent, leadership position available starting September 2021. The selected candidate will lead the Abstractions and Interfaces software branch within the Software Engineering and Architecture Division (SEAD). The Abstractions and Interfaces branch currently has seven full-time researchers and significant software engineering growth potential.

The main focus of the branch is to develop embedded, backend software close to hardware as well as build sensor hardware simulators and/or emulators to support System Integration Laboratories (SIL) for various programs. The branch is responsible for building radar and electronic warfare capabilities for new sensor hardware technologies and supports a software development life cycle from requirements to testing in the field with the sensor hardware. The branch works closely with system engineering, hardware, firmware, test, and sponsor teams.

Job Duties

Management duties include:

  • Development of strategic vision and execution plan for SEAD in conjunction with the Laboratory and Directorate Leadership,
  • Oversight of branch programs and engineering activities,
  • Leading contract development activities and interfacing with sponsors,
  • Personnel management including hiring, performance evaluations, staffing, career development, etc.,
  • Management of budgets, resources, and compliance with policies and procedures.

Research duties include:

  • Lead an Agile team of researchers in the sensor near real-time software.
  • Identify new opportunities to expand our technical capabilities and providing additional functionality for the sponsors,
  • Research activities supporting sponsored projects,
  • Program management of specific research projects,
  • Development and execution of internal research and development programs supporting the division strategic vision,
  • Contribute to SEAD software development process improvements from lesson learn,
  • Development of proposals for new research efforts

Methodology:

  • Guide branch and technical growth and provide focused support for the growing team's technical capabilities and sponsor needs
  • Coordinate team communications to ensure situational awareness across multiple projects
  • Coordinate staff planning and assignments and business development activities
  • Direct business development activities to include sponsor engagement and promoting branch capabilities to internal units and external organizations
  • Develop proposals and white papers for sustained branch growth

Education & Length of Experience

Principal Research Engineer/Scientist

  • A Masters degree in Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, Systems Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or a related field of study and eleven (11) years of relevant full-time experience, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, Systems Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or a related field of study and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience leading small to mid-sized teams of research engineers and technical staff
  • Experience collaborating, organizing, teaming, and communicating with a diverse team of government sponsors, researchers, and other stakeholders to facilitate project performance
  • Ability to create and deliver technical presentations effectively
  • Experience with algorithm design, development, implementation, analysis, and test
  • Ability to obtain an interim clearance within 30 days and a full clearance thereafter

Preferred Qualifications

  • Top Secret Clearance
  • Experience with C++ computer programming language and fluency with GIT
  • Experience with software development best practices, version control, etc.
  • Experience with the technical management of software development

U.S. Citizenship Requirements

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.

Clearance Type Required

Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain an active security clearance.
