Come help build the future of Transit in King County! Over the next few years King County Metro Transit will be expanding our fleet to provide greater Transit service which will include a fleet of all electric buses.  We are recruiting for a Transit Electrical Designer IV to help build the infrastructure that supports that new fleet.  That infrastructure will include:

  • the design and installation of charging stations to support that electric fleet,
  • the design and expansion of our existing transit maintenance and operations facilities,
  • the design and construction of at least one new maintenance and operations facility,
  • the design and installation of passenger facilities and so much more.

All of these require electric power to operate and maintain, we need a dedicated individual to help design these systems so that we can continue to move people safely and electrically throughout the greater Seattle/King County area.

The most competitive candidate for this position will be a team oriented and highly motivated individual who enjoys solving problems.  The selected candidate will join a diverse group of electrical designers and engineers and perform site surveying/mapping and senior level engineering drafting/designer duties using computer aided drafting (CAD) methods, for both major and small transit facility capital projects. 

Additionally, selected candidate will develop work plans, assist in preparing preliminary specifications, and prepare layouts and final drawings.  This is the fourth (senior) level within a six level classification series.

Work Schedule
Our regular business work schedule is 40 hours per week; Monday through Friday though work outside of the normal work day may be required. This position is considered non-exempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act and as such is eligible for overtime pay.

  • Produce, maintain and update engineering drawings and files. Use AutoCad MEP and Revit software to produce engineering design drawings for construction of electrical engineering projects. Apply knowledge of engineering fundamentals in preparing construction plans.
  • Gather and record design data and field information needed for engineering design of major and smaller transit facilities.  (Field investigation work will be performed primarily in King County).
  • Assist in developing CAD standards and create construction standard details; review designs performed by consultants.
  • Provide lead direction and act as a lead designer for design team on a project basis. Create engineering graphics for the production of project plans.  (Responsibilities also include coordination of design tasks with other members of the design section.)
  • Prepare as-built and master facilities drawing and update construction drawings to reflect as-built conditions based on field measurements.
  • Under the supervision of an engineer, and with minimal instruction, independently produce graphic layouts and basic engineering designs including rough cost estimates for assigned projects.
  • Complete engineering drafting assignments with minimal instruction utilizing a full range of graphic techniques and drafting equipment in the preparation of preliminary and final plans/drawings and final contract drawings, including CAD system.
  • Prepare preliminary specifications for design and drafting projects and associated cost estimates.
  • Take charge of field investigations, as built inspections and measurements as required to produce finished As-Built drawings.
  • Assist field inspectors with the review and approval of shop drawings and with the interpretation of specifications.
  • Provide technical assistance to maintenance personnel as requested.
  •  Prepare quantity take offs and cost estimates.
  • Review consultant designs for accuracy and completeness.
  • Maintain and update, when necessary, appropriate engineering records and files such as drawings, specifications, instruction books and catalogs as well as electronic data control.
  • Perform feasibility studies as requested.
  • Develop standard symbols, abbreviations, details and forms for transit designs. Assist in developing training programs.
  • Coordinate drafting work assignments for assigned projects.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


An associate degree or two years of college or technical school training in electrical design, CAD design/drafting OR any equivalent combination of experience and education which provides the applicant with the skills, knowledge and abilities required to perform electrical design work.  
Additional required qualifications are:

  • Six years' experience in electrical design and drafting, in a high production, engineering design office.  (Experience should demonstrate a wide variety of work in which the individual has performed basic engineering designs on CAD systems. Must be highly proficient on and knowledgeable of AutoCAD MEP and Revit.)
  • Working knowledge of electrical engineering fundamentals and capability of practical application to basic engineering designs.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and also independently with little supervision (selected candidate will be required to work in the field alone).
  • Strong customer service skills with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, vendors, consultants and other outside agency representatives.
  • Ability to work with a variety of individuals from diverse backgrounds with diverging opinions and viewpoints.
  • Ability to prioritize assignments, stay organized and manage rapidly changing priorities (must be able to successfully work on a number of projects simultaneously)
  • Working knowledge of codes such as National Electrical Code, Seattle Energy Code, Washington Administrative Code (Chapter 296-46B -Electrical Safety Standards, Administration, and Installation) and City of Seattle Electrical Code amendments.  The position requires a working knowledge of specification writing.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • At least one year of experience in field design investigation
  • Proficiency in the production of complex technical graphic layouts with minimal supervision
  • Work experience providing lead direction on project basis to other CAD designers
  • Experience in transit facilities design

Work Environment

Work is generally performed in an office environment with field investigations required.  Work pressure, disturbances of work flow and/or irregularities in work schedule are expected and occur on an intermittent basis.

Necessary Special Requirements

  • A valid Washington State Driver's License or the ability to get one by time of hire (Ability to drive to and access work sites)
  • Ability to lift, carry and transport survey equipment up to 50 lbs
  • Ability to work in adverse work conditions
