TSINGHUA-BERKELEY SHENZHEN INSTITUTE

 

The Tsinghua-Berkeley Shenzhen Institute (TBSI), located in Shenzhen, China, was jointly established in 2014 by the University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley) and Tsinghua University, with the full support from the Shenzhen Municipal Government, on the initiative of building a bridge across different disciplines, cultures and countries, and between academia and industry, as well as serving as a platform for international collaboration.

 

TBSI consists of three multidisciplinary research centers: Environmental Science and New Energy TechnologyData Science and Information Technology, and Precision Medicine and Healthcare. TBSI offers a vibrant research culture that encourages the inter-disciplinary and ground breaking research in a collegial atmosphere and intensive communications with the local and global flagship technology companies.

 

Research centers at TBSI invite applications for tenure-track Assistant Professor/Associate Professor/Full Professor positions in the following areas:

 

Center 2 - Data Science and Information Technology Center

 

Lab 2a: Sensors and Microsystems

Sensors and sensing technologies; Sensors for internet of things; Microfluidics and instrumentations; and Integrated energy harvesting/storage systems. Topics of specialization include, but are not limited to, design and development of silicon-based and/or polymer-based micro systems for applications to human health and wellbeing, security and energy; micro and nanoscale mechanics, materials, heat transfer, dynamics, process and manufacturing, and device and system design along with the appropriate analytical and computational capabilities; microfluidic systems for point-of-care applications; design of energy systems, alternative energy technologies, energy efficient processes for hand-held systems.

 

Lab 2b: Nano-Devices

Expertise in one of the following fields in nano-optoelectronics and nano-photonics: new optical system technologies optical imaging, holography, metrology, and phase-space optics; novel devices including  lasers, LEDs, solar cells, sensors and photodetectors; nano-material synthesis, epitaxy, characterization and hetero-integration.  Applications may include applications 3D optical ranging and imaging systems such as optical coherent tomography and LIDAR; compact bio-chemical and environment sensors and health monitors; wearable photonics; and high-speed next-generation optical communications. 

 

Lab 2c: Internet of Things and Societal Cyber Physical Systems

We are seeking candidates who are committing to solving the most critical problems at the intersection of social, cyber and physical worlds. All areas of research will be considered, including but not limited to:

·   Signal processing and information mining technologies for big sensory data;

·   Wireless and mobile sensing systems;

·   Crowd-sensing systems;

·   Internet of Things infrastructure;

·   The safety, security, and reliability of Big Sensor Data systems and Cyber-Physical systems;

·   Smart Cities and Smart Building applications;

·   Environmental sensing applications;

·   Medical sensing devices, and closed-loop medical systems;

·   Human behavior sensing and incentivization systems;

·   Robotics, drones, and autonomous or connected vehicles;

·   Other technologies or applications related to Cyber-Physical Systems.

 

Lab 2d: Future Internet

Future Internet architecture and protocol design; protocol testing formal method; cyber security; distributed mass information storage and transmission technology; Internet application; Mobile Internet. Topics of specialization include, but are not limited to, smart routing algorithms for energy-efficient   routing; FIB aggregation for scalable routing; two dimension  routing for finer-grained routing control, security and privacy for big data, applied cryptography.

 

Lab 2e: Big Data Research

Big data analytics; Big data networking and systems; Data sensingcollectioncleaning and preprocessing; Machine learning and distributed algorithms; data mining Cloud computing and mobile cloud; Data-driven network design; Data-driven multimedia applications

 

Lab 2f: Smart Imaging Research

Optical imaging, light field photography, gigapixel video photography, hyperspectral imaging, and femosecond transient imaging. 

Topics of specialization include, but are not limited to

·   Wide field microscope imaging system

·   Multi-spectral camral and stereo display

·   Brain science and tumor metastasis imaging and analysis

·   Compression perception theory and application

 

The Center offers M.S. and Ph.D. degrees.

Requirements

Requirements & Responsibilities  

  1. Qualifications: successful applicants must hold a doctorate or equivalent degree. A requirement for the appointment is that the Ph.D. or equivalent degree is awarded. Having research experiences crossing different fields as well as in different institutions is strongly preferred.   
  2. We are especially interested in applicants who are members of the Thousand Youth Talents Plan or the Thousand Talents Plan.  
  3. Ideal candidates are also expected to demonstrate strong communication and teaching skills in English and leadership, as well as the ability to actively contribute to our rapidly growing research efforts at TBSI.  
  4. A strong commitment to graduate teaching and advising is essential. Teaching responsibilities will include participation in and development of graduate courses, and strong engagement in our core curriculum. Supervision of doctoral and M.S.-degree students and academic advising of trainees at all levels are also expected.  

 

Salary and Benefits 

Annual Salary 

The successful applicant will receive a competitive salary that is commensurate with experience and academic accomplishments. Annual salary ranges from CNY400,000 - 1,200,000 (pre-tax).  

 

Research Start-up Package 

For eligible candidates, the research start-up package ranges from CNY1,000,000 - 10, 000,000 depending on entry-level and other factors.

 

Moving/Relocation Allowance  

Moving (relocation) allowance ranges from CNY200,000 - 400,000(pre-tax).  

 

Government Talents’ Plan Allowance*  

TBSI offers assistance to faculty and researchers in their applications for talents’ allowance up to CNY3,000,000 sponsored by the Shenzhen Government, as well as other Shenzhen high-level talents plans.

 

Admin Support

Each lab will be supported with one secretary and one engineer.

 

Student & Postdoc Recruiting   

Faculty members may compete for TBSI-funded researchers, typically one postdoctoral fellow, one Ph.D. student, and several master degree students, if applicable.
