The University of Michigan and Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) have established a Joint Institute in Shanghai, with a commitment to build a world class academic institution, based on the U.S. research university model. Since it was founded in April 2006, the JI has been receiving strong support from both partner universities and the Chinese government. The JI offers B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. Programs in Electrical and Computer Engineering. The Electrical and Computer Engineering Program is ABET accredited. The JI models itself after the world class U.S. research universities, in terms of academic environment, faculty expectations, graduate program research, and undergraduate curriculum. The JI invites applications for

  1. Tenure-track (rank open) and tenured positions, in all emerging fields related to Electrical and Computer Engineering.
  2. Non-tenure-track (rank open) positions, in all emerging fields related to Electrical and Computer Engineering. 

These positions are open to top caliber applicants from around the world.

Tenure-track (rank open) and tenured positions

The JI aims to have 50 full-time tenured/tenure-track faculty members. These positions will be filled on a continuing basis. Successful candidates are expected to establish vigorous research programs, mentor Ph.D. students, participate in the international research community and teach undergraduate and graduate classes.

Candidates should possess doctoral degrees and demonstrate research accomplishment or potential. Salaries are highly competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The JI has a tenure review and promotion system, comparable to that at major U.S. research universities. JI faculty members have opportunities to collaborate with UM and SJTU faculty.

Non-tenure-track (rank open) positions

The Requirements include: 1) A doctoral degree in related field; 2) Native-level English skills (native speaker preferred); 3) For Electrical and Computer Engineering, rich experience in teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in but not limited to circuits, computing, electromagnetics, communications;4) Lab development experience a plus; 5) Industrial experience a plus.

The responsibilities of a non-tenure-track faculty member include: 1) Deliver up to 6 classes per academic year; 2) Guide TAs in conducting recitation classes and grading students’ work; 3) Participate in other institutional activities, including curriculum development, committee service, etc.
