Job Details

The selected individual will serve as the mission operations lead for the Lucy interplanetary spacecraft. In this capacity the candidate will guide the planning for Mission Operations and the technical development of the Ground Data System (GDS) through formulation, detailed design, delivery, and verification. After launch, this individual will function as the Mission Operations manager and will be responsible for daily planning and execution of the Lucy in-flight operations. Prior to flight, specific duties include creation of the mission operations products (blocks, sequences, etc) and the development/validation/verification of the ground data system. Once in flight, this individual will work closely with the NASA mission manager to execute the Lucy mission plan and lead the spacecraft flight engineering team. The successful candidate will have an understanding of all spacecraft systems and the unique challenges of a deep space mission. As a technical lead, this candidate will work closely with the mission designers, instrument providers, and system engineers to meet the unique requirements associated with Lucy's heliocentric orbit and flyby of the Trojan asteroids. A successful candidate requires knowledge of and strong experience with the system engineering processes and how they relate to a fixed-launch window. Strong interpersonal skills are very important as this individual will work directly with the other program elements, senior management, vendors, and our NASA customer

Basic Qualifications
- Demonstrated experience with the entire product life-cycle of an interplanetary spacecraft to include early formulation, requirements development, design, fabrication, system assembly, test, launch, and/or in-flight operations
- Previous, and demonstrated experience with the development of an operational ground system and mission operations products
- Working knowledge of spacecraft system engineering and related processes
- Demonstrated interpersonal skills and teamwork with internal and external customers

Desired skills
Direct working experience with Principal Investigator led missions
Direct working experience with the unique challenges associated with university provided instruments
Direct working experience with NASA and/or the Goddard Space Flight Center
