GTRI-CIPHER seeks an IT Operations Support Technician (Systems Administrator) for the internal Information Technology group, responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the IT Helpdesk. The CTISL IT team supports over 250 researchers, engineers, and support staff tackling complex and novel IT challenges for commercial and government customers.  The CIPHER IT team is distributed across multiple campus buildings and also supports a sizable base of remote users across the United States.  The candidate will work closely with the Helpdesk Manager, IT Operations lead, and Infrastructure Lead to facilitate and improve day-to-day IT operations for CIPHER.  

Job Purpose: Provide unit level support in the installation, operation and maintenance of computer systems. Position typically addresses a wide variety of applications often involving highly complex issues, working under general supervision while providing work guidance to lower levels.
Major Responsibilities: 

  • Install, maintain and upgrade workstation and peripheral hardware and software.
  • Analyze and resolve complex workstation, application and server related problems.
  • Update desktop software/applications; maintain documentation on installed applications.
  • Provide users with assistance in working in specific applications.
  • Participate in development of standard operating procedures.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications: 

Research Engineer/Scientist/Technologist/Associate I

  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology or equivalent combination of education and experience

Research Engineer/Scientist/Technologist/Associate II

  • A Master’s degree in Information Technology or equivalent combination of education and experience

Work Experience: Two to four years job related experience.
Certifications: N/A
Skills: This job requires advanced knowledge of and skill in the installation and maintenance of information technology hardware and software, requiring a full understanding of industry practices and campus policies and procedures. Included are skills in problem solving, decision making, customer service, system documentation and communications.


  • Candidate must be a US citizen
  • Candidate must be capable of holding a Secret DoD Security clearance.
  • Candidate must be able to obtain and maintain DoD Directive 8570.1 IAT Level II compliance within 12 months of hire.

Preferred Qualifications: 
Preferred Work Experience: 2-4 years in IT
Preferred Certifications: Security+
Preferred Skills: Experience with Windows Server, Windows client, Mac OS, Red Hat Linux, Ubuntu; experience with Jira ServiceDesk, Confluence, JIRA; experience with system staging using automated provisioning tools specifically SCCM and JAMF Pro; experience with virtualization.

Additional Information: 
This position will interact on a consistent basis with: users within assigned unit which can include management, faculty and staff personnel. This position typically will advise and counsel: users and other support personnel.
