Our Global Breeding Automation Engineering Team is a group of technologists passionate about creating systems to fuel the farm of the future.  We are reimagining and rebuilding our entire suite of field and lab technologies for the world of digital ag -- a world that is geospatial, automated, and cognitive; a world where every plant matters.  A world where machines, agronomists, breeders, scientists, and engineers work collaboratively to deliver products that revolutionize the experience of our customers.   
We are looking for a System Support Engineer to join our team to start up, optimize, and maintain a new seed packaging center in the Indianapolis area.  Using your demonstrated know-how and troubleshooting skills, you will maintain, repair, and continuously improve the quality and reliability of our automated systems and processes.  Sharing the lessons you learn with the rest of the team will provide crucial insight and drive change as our systems evolve.   With your passion for digging into complex machinery and your knowledge of proven and effective preventive maintenance techniques, measures and remedies, you’ll tackle a variety of challenges with our small, innovative team.

  • Start-up of plant equipment with suppliers, design engineering team, and site manager.
  • In partnership with other seed packaging locations, create maintenance systems and processes for the new plant.
  • Continuous support, maintenance, and repair of seed packaging automation systems, including interactions with site operations staff and scheduling of outside service providers as necessary to enable maximum operational efficiency 
  • Lead Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCFA) and develop corrective actions for system and equipment malfunctions
  • Accountable for quality control and continual assessment of processes and automation systems against established key performance metrics
  • Train, direct, and work along-side technicians in maintenance and repair activities.
  • Ensure compliance of all technologies with local safety and operations standards
  • Work with internal teams and outside vendors to ensure a thorough spare parts inventory is maintained for minimal repair downtime
  • Define and implement SOPs and preventative maintenance procedures including site-specific requirements
  • Effectively communicate SOPs, uptime, performance metrics, and daily status of machines to local stakeholders with regular updates to remote leadership
  • Lead reliability improvement projects and collaborate with Monsanto automation design teams to identify, develop, implement, and test equipment modifications for reliability and maintenance improvements.
  • Development of detailed metrics, models, and cost benefit analyses for project review and justification
  • Assist in support of other automated systems (seed packaging, field equipment, etc.) as needed in off-season. 


Required Skills/Experience:
  • Minimum of Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, Maintenance Engineering, Reliability Engineering, or a related field
  • Strong hands-on experience with automated instrumentation/equipment for laboratory, production, and/or agricultural field environments
  • Proactive approach to equipment maintenance to anticipate issues and process bottlenecks
  • Strong computer skills related to data capture, organization and analysis
  • Strong foresight, planning, prioritization and organizational skills
  • Passion for and experience with quickly identifying and troubleshooting problems in automation and control systems (mechanical, electrical, and software)
  • Demonstrated effective written and oral communication


Desired Skills/Experience:

  • Familiarity with seed technologies and plant breeding methodologies
  • Specific experience with SolidWorks CAD software
  • Specific experience with reliability-centered maintenance procedures
  • Experience with installation and programming of automation and control systems
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and experience working in a highly matrixed environment
  • Familiarity with Six Sigma methodology 
  • Knowledge/Experience with Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA), Reliability-Centered Maintenance, and Root Cause Failure Analysis,
  • Prior Quality, Reliability, and/or Maintenance experience in related industries
