Job Details

Lead System Safety Engineer for the AN/SQQ-89A(V)15, which is the primary Undersea Warfare (USW) Combat System aboard Navy surface platforms to conduct all phases of surface USW operations. The Lead System Safety Engineer is responsible for conducting the System Safety Program to encompass the full system life cycle and address both software and hardware safety. The Lead System Safety Engineer is an active participant in the System Safety Working Group (SSWG), communicating regularly with the Navy Principal for Safety (PFS).
The Lead System Safety Engineer coordinates and directs the LM technical and daily operational safety activities. The Lead System Safety Engineer primary responsibilities include:

Conducting the Software Safety Program that conforms to the Joint Software System Safety Engineering Handbook, focusing on recommending safety features and controls for mitigation/elimination of hazards

Conducting the Hardware Safety Program to evaluate and mitigate/eliminate electrical, mechanical, physical, and biological hazards, including hazardous material management

Performing risk assessment and mitigation for all identified safety mishaps and hazards, reporting on risk assessment and mitigation at design reviews

Performing safety review of Incident Reports (IRs), Request for Deviations, Request for Waivers, and Interface Change Requests

Documenting and tracking all identified safety hazards

Developing software and hardware safety requirements, and ensuring safety requirements are verified during integration and test

Completing MIL-STD-882E System Safety hazard analyses, clearly documenting all results for formal report delivery to the customer

Reporting hazard and risk analysis results in the reports for Program Acquisition Office risk acceptance

Presenting results of the System Safety Program to the Weapon Systems Explosives Safety Review Board (WSESRB) and Software Systems Safety Technical Review Panel (SSSTRP) meetings
The Lead System Safety Engineer will be expected to work semi-autonomously, be highly proactive and be able to handle significant responsibility. Candidate will work in a team environment, interfacing daily with software, hardware and systems engineers
Limited travel required to support SSWG, WSESRB, SSSTRP meetings

Basic Qualifications

Must be a US Citizen and be able to obtain a DoD Secret security clearance

Bachelor’s or above degree in an Engineering, Technical or related field

Experience performing Safety Hazard Analyses, including Functional Hazard Analysis

Experience applying MIL-STD-882, MIL-HDBK-454, MIL-STD-1472, Joint Software System Safety Engineering Handbook criteria to safety programs

Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to build effective working relationships

Excellent oral and written communication skills

Ability to perform detail-oriented work with a high degree of accuracy

Ability to collaborate in a multi-disciplinary, diverse, and dynamic team

Technical writing experience and ability to present in front of large groups

Proficient with Microsoft Office products

Desired skills

Experience supporting System Safety Working Groups and interfacing with customer/PFS

Experience preparing software system safety documentation and presenting safety results/conclusions to the WSESRB, SSSTRP or equivalent safety boards

Experience supporting Government conducted tests and providing Safety analysis of test results

Hazardous Materials Management knowledge

Active DoD Secret security clearance

US Navy USW experience

Knowledge of Human Factors and Systems Engineering
