This position is a hands-on aerospace materials development engineer located within the Mechanical Engineering Department, emphasizing military systems. The primary job responsibility is to execute trade studies and advise on material selections, tests, and failure assessments, to support concept selection, detailed design, build, evaluation, and test of component parts, mechanical test articles, sub-assemblies, and integration test articles in support of IRAD projects and contracted programs. The engineer will apply a mature knowledge of:
• Engineering design rules of thumb for aerospace materials,
• Diverse knowledge of a broad suite of material systems and manufacturing concepts sufficient to assess engineering design/manufacturing trade studies

The objective will be technically sound, cost effective and timely engineering solutions for the application of materials, processes and finishes. Conducts trade studies, materials lab tests, and analyses as necessary to select and qualify optimum materials and processes for engineering solutions to enable programs to meet schedule commitments and performance requirements. The position must be effective in interaction with the internal Engineering Fabrication Development Lab, the internal Advanced Manufacturing Technology group, and/or with outside fabrication vendors

Execution will also require significant coordination with other engineering and manufacturing groups and disciplines including especially systems requirements engineering, materials test, structural analysis, and manufacturing engineering. Other coordination may involve engineering release, non-destructive inspection, quality inspection, thermal analysis, and systems integration, as well as procurement and outside vendors. Experience with design/testing of flight hardware preferred

The position reports to the Materials Evaluation Laboratories Fabrication Group Manager, under the Mechanical Engineering Laboratories Senior Manager, operating as a key section of the Mechanical Engineering Directorate within Engineering and Technology for Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control in Orlando

The Greater Orlando metropolitan area is the sixth largest metro area in the southeastern United States. The climate here is warm and sunny all year long for the most part. Orlando is home to the University of Central Florida (UCF), Walt Disney World, and SeaWorld. Where can you get to from Orlando? Orlando is about an hour's drive from Cocoa Beach and the "space coast" to include NASA and the Kennedy Space Center. Tampa is about 1 and ¼ hours from Orlando. West Palm Beach is about 2.5 hours to the south and Jacksonville is about 2 hours to the northeast. Atlanta, GA is 6 hours to the northwest

Basic Qualifications
-Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field
-Experience in Materials Science
-Experience in hardware design and development
-Candidate must have experience selecting and testing of materials and fabrication processes, both in the development and use of selected materials
-Experience validating the performance characteristics and suitability of new engineering materials through analysis and laboratory testing
-Basic knowledge of manufacturing methods
-Ability to coordinate and work multiple technical activities concurrently
-Ability to plan and prioritize work appropriate to resources and schedule
-Excellent verbal & written communication skills
-Candidate must be able to obtain a Security Clearance

Desired skills
-Skilled in tolerance analysis, GD&T (Geometric dimensioning and tolerancing) and precision mechanical design and documentation
-Experience with Pro/E CREO 3D CAD modeling or similar
-Radar absorbing materials experience
-Composite materials and processes
-3D printed material systems
-Skilled in Microsoft Office products
-Current DoD Secret Security Clearance
