Job Details

MAJOR FUNCTION:

Engineering design, mechanical, and electrical BMS and BLDC systems integration across multiple product categories.  Advanced analysis of technology roadmap driving conformance to specifications over a wide range of product platforms.  Partners with marketing, service and test to create specification definition.  Utilizes test and customer data, determines the causes of failures and develops appropriate solutions.  Executes a project plan through product launch and ongoing support.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead and coordinate the development of new product concepts, new products, or improvements to existing products. Creates specifications and design scope to meet/exceed product plan.  Develops product design plans including budgets and schedules.
  • Performs engineering analysis to predict the behavior of the proposed designs.
  • Consults with other product design/electrical engineers, marketing, sales or service on proposed product designs. May be responsible for work direction of engineers, designers, drafters, contract/consulting personnel, and others. Actively participates in the development and understanding of customer requirements through direct contact with marketing, customers, service, manufacturing and distribution.
  • Works with vendors to finalize designs and implements, in hardware and software, the needs of the product application. Helps assure that the vendor meets the requirements of the design.
  • Performs functions as required by established engineering procedures including project requests through engineering release and change management procedures.
  • Assures that designs meet the requirements of the customer as defined by safety and any applicable industry or Toro standards.
  • May supervise designers and engineers which includes selection, training, discipline, performance appraisal, salary review, setting and monitoring objectives and other related tasks in support of engineering project goals and objectives.
  • Coordinates work with the product development team members such as but not exclusively: Shop, Test, Drafting, CAE, Quality, Marketing, Purchasing, Plants, Advanced Manufacturing, Sales, Technical Publications, Administration, and Management. Conducts, leads, and participates in regular project team meetings.
  • Responsible for overseeing drawing package, bill of material, and product specifications.
  • Works with test engineers and technicians to develop tests, which simulate the requirements of the customer. Evaluates test data and develops design revisions to solve problems.
  • Keeps abreast of new technological developments, components, concepts, materials, manufacturing processes, or competitive environment, which would affect the design or design process.
  • 10-15% travel to test sites, manufacturing facilities,  vendors, customers, and others will be required. 
  • Ability to work with others in teams to accomplish goals. Includes task and/or project leadership. 
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

SPECIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelors degree in an ABET accredited Mechanical, Electrical, Systems, Biomedical, Aeronautical or Agricultural engineering program or equivalent or Masters degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Systems, Biomedical, Aeronautical or Agricultural engineering or equivalent from a university with an ABET accredited undergraduate engineering program.
  • Plus a minimum of 5-8 years experience preferably in the battery powered equipment industry with electro-mechanical component and Battery Management Systems (BMS) controls.
  • Experience working with marketing and customers defining specifications and launching products to market using domestic and foreign-sourced components and production facilities.
  • Knowledge of system engineering methodologies is highly desired.
  • Familiarity with Lithium-based battery technologies and battery management systems (BMS) is highly desired.
  • Strong understanding of design, development and qualification processes.
  • Strong ability in root cause failure analysis and corrective action planning.
  • Knowledge of U.L., C.S.A., and CE Standards.
  • Must be able to plan and execute all technical engineering activity for complete product development and systems integration.
  • Must be able to direct activities of mechanical and electrical engineers, designers, drafters and supports groups, such as prototype and test personnel.
