MITREs infrastructure sustainment team is looking for a Network Engineer. This is an opportunity to support an operational network is actively engaged in developing and deploying new services in a secure manner.

Role:


  • Conduct hands-on lab analysis to solve technical issues, consider potential integration opportunities, and understand performance/scalability issues.


  • Work closely with industry to understand best practices and maintain a pulse of innovations in the networking and network security area.


  • Perform hands-on assessments of capabilities in the networking and network security market to determine how these capabilities may work with existing sponsor infrastructure.


  • Develop written products and technical reports that highlight findings and recommendations.


  • Develop prototypes that demonstrate novel solutions to sponsor problems.


  • Provide network engineering support to a variety of sponsor and research based projects including design, development, integration, and implementation activities in support of network systems.


  • Solve complex networking problems in areas spanning enterprise IT networks, data center infrastructure, critical infrastructure, network operations, and more.

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering or similar field. Candidate should possess the ability to be responsible for deliverables or parts of deliverables to MITRE customers.


 

  • Bachelors Degree in one of the following disciplines, Electrical, Computer or Systems Engineering. The candidate will possess demonstrated ability to provide deliverables or parts of deliverables to customers.
Required Skills:


  • A passion to learn and work on challenging problems


  • Strong interest in networks and related technologies


  • Familiarity with network design and common routing/switching protocols


  • Understanding of networks and fundamental layer 3 and 4 protocols (e.g. IP, TCP, UDP, etc.)


  • Experience in programming methods/languages such as Shell Scripting, Perl, Python, Ruby, C/C++, Java


  • Understanding of network protocols such as Domain Name Service (DNS), Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP), IP Routing (OSPF, EIGRP, BGP)


  • Knowledge of common security capabilities such as firewalls, intrusion prevention systems, and full packet capture


  • Exposure to IoT, industrial control system, and embedded networking protocols is a plus


  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills


  • Strong written and verbal communications skills


  • Demonstrated ability to develop effective technical and support documentation for use by engineering and sustainment staff to include design & test plans, implementation plans, and automation plans using standard templates (where existing) or proposing & creating new templates where needed.


  • Ability to review operational metrics and make analytic decisions/recommendations about operational infrastructure performance


  • Ability to engage in analytical troubleshooting and performance analysis work under operational deadlines


  • Ability to participate in on-call rotations and occasional off-hours work to support emergencies and projects


  • Deploy all hardware/software configurations following established standards in an automatable and auditable method.
