Sr. Electrical Engineer I
The Sr. Electrical Engineer is responsible for supporting the implementation of large scale control system projects at various NYPA facilities including generator controls, substation automation and plant wide control systems.
+ Provide oversight as lead engineer (a.k.a. project engineer) of complex, multidiscipline projects covering all aspects of plant controls and generation equipment.
+ Develop designs, specifications and engineered solutions for various low voltage electrical equipment
+ Provide technical guidance and collaborate with internal NYPA groups to evaluate and develop solutions that best meets NYPA’s goal for safe and reliable plant operation.
+ Ensure design work is performed in accordance with latest standards, codes and safety requirements.
+ Make factory visits to support design reviews and testing, as coordinate with vendors during the manufacturing process.
+ Review detailed technical submittals from equipment vendors ensuring compliance with contract requirements and NYPA requirements.
+ Coordinate technical reviews of all project submittals with other engineering disciplines
+ Support the drafting of engineering specifications, review bid documents, and evaluate bids for award to meet the short and long-term plans and projects to meet NYPA and facility objectives for control and monitoring systems and facility modernization
+ Highly technical and self-motivated individual.
+ Strong project management skills with demonstrated experience to implement large complex control and electrical project.
+ Ability to work both independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team.
+ Excellent interpersonal skills; good written and verbal communication skills; possess the ability to effectively present complex technical ideas to a broad audience.
+ Ability to work independently to investigate, analyze and develop solutions to complex control problems.
+ Thorough understanding of and experience in the operation and control of conventional hydro, pump storage hydro, and combined cycle generating plants
+ Knowledge of commercial and industrial facilities and their various electrical and control systems and components are required.
+ Support field construction activities involving all electrical and controls work, low voltage (600V) power equipment, low voltage wiring, raceways, battery and UPS systems.
+ Knowledgeable in the application of electrical protection to generators, station service and generator feeders utilizing microprocessor based relays and fiber optic communications.
+ Familiar with fiber optic cable installation, testing and terminations.
+ Working knowledge of industry codes and standards such as IEEE, ISA, ANSI, ASME, and NEC is required.
+ Ability to develop complete, accurate and detailed modification packages, specifications, drawings and other engineered construction documents.
+ Basic experience with database application development and programming, data storage, data analysis, and system administration.
+ Some networking infrastructure experience, such as local and wide area networking, network protocols (such as: TCP/IP, T1, frame relay), and configuring and administering network infrastructure devices such as network switches, routers, firewalls, and intrusion detection devices.
+ Basic experience and understanding of cyber security principles, practices, architectures, and NERC CIP standards
+ Working knowledge of computer based office programs for word processing and data manipulation.
+ Basic knowledge of computer-based engineering analysis programs.
+ This position requires approximately 25% travel.
+ Bachelor’s degree in engineering is required with a minimum of ten (10) years applicable experience in a utility, independent power producer, OEM, or control system integrator. Master’s or Ph. D degree preferred.
+ A NYS PE license is required.
+ Development of specifications for low voltage (600V) instrument and control cable in accordance with applicable industry standards.
+ Development of complete specifications for plant wide control systems and substation automation projects.
+ Full cycle project experience from early planning, to final turnover for large projects.
+ Applying industry standards to equipment specifications and procurement.
+ Knowledge of pertinent ISA standards associated with process plant controls, monitoring and design.
+ Discrete and process control logic development in ladder logic and SAMA.
+ Experience with multiple process measurement technologies for level, pressure, temperature and flow.
+ Thorough understanding of communication protocols used in the utility industry including DNP, MODBUS, IEC 61850 along with the various transports used for these.
+ Extensive experience in designing, managing, and executing complex control system projects including PLC, DCS, hardwired, SCADA, and various IEDs.
+ HMI development and process alarm management in accordance with ISA 18.2.
