The Aerial Communications Department is seeking an experienced engineer with an in-depth knowledge of tactical data links (TDLs), particularly Link 16, to include: operational concepts of employment; integration of TDLs into platforms; and the modification/use of message standards to meet the operational platform needs. The candidate should have domain knowledge in the military command and control area, including an understanding of voice and data information exchanges in a challenging communications environment. The selected individual will be responsible for addressing improvements across a range of Department of Defense (DoD) tactical communication systems, from requirements definition through design, integration, test, and fielding. In order to provide fielded solutions for the DoDs expanding tactical communication needs, the individual will be working with both experienced MITRE engineers (responsible for implementing the data link systems on platforms) and with platform operators themselves

Key Functions:

  • Analyze existing/evolving tactical data link communications systems to make recommendations regarding system requirements and system-of-systems architectures, collaborating with the operational community throughout the process.

  • Work with the operational community to identify/document the requirements for next generation Tactical Data Networks and translate those evolving requirements into a definitive architecture

  • Conduct analyses of vendors system developments, both new developments and planned upgrades, to assure satisfaction of requirements. Analytic methods to include modeling via use of spreadsheets, MATLAB, OpNet and similar tools

  • Engage in modification/creation of tactical communications message standards as needed

  • Support operational users during the test and fielding of new/enhanced systems

  • Collaborate with Command and Control (C2) and Platform-centric programs on the operational employment of enterprise level tactical communications

Required Qualifications:
BS or MS degree in one of the following disciplines: Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, Systems Engineering

  • Operational experience with TDLs, Link 16 in particular

  • In depth knowledge of Link 16

  • Strong analytical, written communication, and verbal communication skills
Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong background in Link 16 waveform properties, the integration of Link 16 into a platform, the use of J-Series messages by a platform, and/or Link 16 network design

  • Prior Military operational experience (e.g., pilot, data link operator, JICO, etc.) with Link 16

  • Ability to work independently and represent our DoD customers interests throughout the life cycle of an acquisition program (i.e., concept development, design, integration, test and fielding)

  • Ability to collaborate across multiple organizations and engineering disciplines

  • Ability to conduct independent evaluations of contractor designs and influence communications integration approaches.

  • Ability to frame and articulate technical requirements in operational and programmatic terms.

  • Understanding of the DoD acquisition process.
Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS and 3 years rlated experience.
