POSITION SUMMARY:

This job posting is for a full time position within GTRI’s Electronic Systems Laboratory (ELSYS) in Tucson, AZ, as either a Senior or Principal Researcher.  ELSYS delivers innovative products, research, and education that have positive and lasting impacts on our customers.  This position is for a site manager and engineer to lead and contribute to a team of ten (10) individuals conducting research, providing test and engineering support as well as managing ongoing sponsored projects and activities at the Air National Guard, Air Force Reserve Command Test Center (AATC) in Tucson AZ. Expected programs and flight test opportunities will involve A-10, F-15C, F-16C+, F-16CM, C-130H and HH-60 aircraft as well as programs supporting Logistics and Battlefield Airman related programs.  Areas of test will include developmental test (DT) and operational test (OT) on a wide variety of modernization and sustainment modifications.  The majority of projects will involve work in the electronic warfare or sensors areas (e.g. data links, avionics, radar, EA pods, threat sensors, and targeting/imaging sensors).   ELSYS works closely with AATC to provide modernization and sustainment solutions to operational warfighters.  Test functions involve developing requirements, performing program management, writing test plans, defining and installing test instrumentation, conducting a full range of tests (bench, laboratory, HITL, open air, etc), and writing test reports.  Because of the close interaction with AATC and GTRI campus researchers, extensive military flight experience and extensive experience working engineering programs related to tactical aircraft is highly desired.  This position requires excellent written and verbal communication skills to convey test results to the US Government.  This position also interacts with GTRI, US Government, and other contractor personnel.  An ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance is required.   

REQUIREMENTS THAT MUST BE MET TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS POSITION:

  • US Citizenship and ability to immediately obtain a DoD security clearance
  • 15+ years’ experience in relevant electronic warfare, avionics, engineering and/or military work
  • Experience supervising and managing a diverse team

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s and/or Master’s Degree in a related engineering, technical or scientific field
  • Extensive military flight experience in aircraft such as the F-16, A-10, HH-60, C-130 or F-15
  • Graduate of Test Pilot School or Weapons School
  • Test pilot or weapons officer experience
  • Technical understanding of surface-to-air and air-to-air threat systems and countermeasures
  • Experience related to tactical aircraft operations, employment, requirements, engineering development and test.

Examples of relevant program management work include: sustainment of A-10 and F-16 EW systems, modernization of F-16 MWS system, A-10 and F-16 weapons testing, engineering lead on F-16, F-15, A-10, C-130 or similar aircraft avionics or EW systems or upgrades, and sustainment of LINK16 and SADL networks.  Companies performing similar work are Raytheon, Northrup Grumman, and Lockheed. 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • To be hired as a Senior Research Engineer, Scientist or Associate requires: 
  • A Master’s degree and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree, or
  • A Master’s degree and nine (9) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor’s degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree and four (4) years' relevant full-time experience For candidates holding the Doctoral degree, the last two (2) years of employment prior to employment at Georgia Tech will be considered if adequately documented, and the four-year time in grade requirement be reduced to two (2) years for candidates so qualified.

 

  • To be hired as a Principal Research Engineer, Scientist or Associate requires:
  • A Master’s degree and eleven (11) years of relevant full-time experience,
  • A Doctoral degree and seven (7) years relevant full-time experience.   
  • At least the most recent three (3) years of relevant experience shall have been at a responsible technical or managerial level. Preference will be shown for qualified personnel holding a Doctoral degree in their specific discipline.
