About T&D:

Southern California Edison’s (SCE's) Transmission and Distribution Organizational Unit (T & D) is responsible for planning, engineering, constructing, operating, and maintaining transmission and distribution facilities throughout the 50,000-square-mile territory. T&D is the steward of roughly $19 billion in assets that safely and reliably deliver electricity to 14 million residents via SCE’s 5 million customer accounts.

 
Position overview:

This position will be a Senior Power Transformer Engineer – working with Substation Apparatus Engineering in the Engineering & Technical Services (E&TS) Group within Southern California Edison (SCE)'s Transmission & Distribution Business Unit (TDBU).

The successful candidate will be supporting the strategic equipment specification development that will form the basis for new equipment and materials that will be used on the SCE grid for years into the future; leading the development, specification, and quality assurance of major electrical substation and distribution system equipment and material supply required to support TDOU. Power transformer is one of the most critical asset of the electric grid.  It is critical because of the complexity of design, manufacturing, testing, cost, and long lead time. 

 

Typical Responsibilities may include:

  • Providing the critical technical leadership role to oversee all technical aspects of the power transformer fleet for SCE.
  • Provide guidance to performing QA audits of major/key manufacturers
  • Provide technical leadership to revamp the technical specifications for the major power apparatus as we continue to look for more reliable and cost effective bulk power apparatus to serve our mission of providing safe, reliable, and affordable electricity to our customers.
  • Integrating, documenting and training on bulk power equipment strategy, including critical spare transformers, system spare transformers and STEP transformers,
  • Documenting complete Transformer qualification procedures including specification and RFP process, RFP bid technical evaluation, plant audit, design package review, test plan review, coil/core or pre-assembled plant inspection, test plan requirements, test witness, shipping, installation and in-servicing
  • Perform transformer heat run or substation capacity analysis.
  • Developing equipment rating processes and procedures.
  • Resolve technical issues related to projects, equipment installation, and equipment maintenance. 
  • Perform factory and site acceptance testing activities
  • Support power transformer field testing and commissioning activities

Requirements

Minimum qualifications
  • Must have a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Science or related technical discipline.
  • Eleven  or more years of electrical engineering experience
  • Seven or more years of technical experience in distribution, substation, and/or transmission engineering related to the application of electrical apparatus in substations and distribution systems.
  • Demonstrated experience with industry standards (IEEE, IEC, ANSI, etc), codes and practices.
  • Must have Valid U.S Drivers License.

  • Master’s Degree in Engineering, Science or related discipline
  • Demonstrated ability to interface effectively and collaborate with clients, peers, project personnel, and all levels of management enterprise-wide to develop solutions and ensure stakeholder buy-in.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to accurately analyze information, make strategic decisions/recommendations, and guide others’ decision making by identifying the anticipated benefits, consequences, and impacts of alternatives.
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative and accountability for the accuracy of information and for achieving results.
  • Must possess excellent computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Word, Access, PowerPoint, and an emphasis on Excel.
  • Must demonstrate excellent management mastery, including effective resource and project planning, decision making, results delivery, team building, and staying current with relevant technology and innovation.
  • Must demonstrate strong personal mastery, including ethics, leadership, interpersonal skills, communication, and the ability to effectively manage stress and engage in continuous learning.
