Job Details

We are seeking an experienced and enthusiastic academic to play a senior leadership role and catalyse new opportunities for imaging and biomedical engineering research across QUT and beyond. We believe the right person will help QUT realise the full potential of its capabilities in this highly interdisciplinary domain.

This critical position will sit within the School's Vision and Signal Processing Discipline a group with world-leading expertise across computer vision, signal processing, machine learning and pattern recognition.

We seek someone with a broad vision for imaging and biomedical engineering; someone who can build on the group’s core expertise, and provide strong collaborative linkages across disciplines, government and medical industries for real world impact.


This position will help the School build new, high impact collaborations in imaging and biomedical engineering application areas, leveraging strengths across QUT, including with The Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation (IHBI) and the Institute for Future Environments (IFE).

We welcome applications that demonstrate excellence across teaching and research in areas of imaging and biomedical engineering such as medical imaging; biomedical informatics; medical devices; robotically assisted surgery; or other medical applications of computational intelligence. Demonstrated ability to use basic research to improve patient outcomes will be viewed favourably.


Key responsibilities include:

  • Leadership in advancing research into imaging and biomedical engineering and its translation to high-impact applications.
  • Research-inspired teaching in topics relevant to imaging, vision, computational intelligence, and engineering more broadly.
  • Building the Discipline's research capacity and impact by attracting government and industry funded research income, catalysing new collaborations, leading research teams, and enabling academic colleagues.
  • Initiate, build and strengthen relationships between the University, industry, medical professions and the community. Help communicate with and disseminate information to these stakeholders.
  • Publication of academic research papers, supervision of research staff, and attracting government and industry-funded research income.
  • Service to the university through mentoring of junior staff, participation in relevant academic committees, assistance with student recruitment activities and extra-curricular student events, etc.
  • Contributing to the profession through appropriate engagement with conference organisation, journal manuscript reviewing, etc.
  • Supervision of student projects at both undergraduate (Bachelors) and postgraduate (Masters and Doctorate) levels.
  • Implementing and administering University policy within the Faculty with respect to equitable access to education and workplace health and safety.

Requirements

  1. Record of outstanding leadership of research, including extensive experience obtaining external grants, publishing in top tier journals, and engagement with industry and medical professions.
  2. Record of excellence and leadership in scholarly and innovative approaches to teaching and learning at tertiary level
  3. Demonstrated success at establishing and maintaining collaborations that extend best practice, implement leading solutions and realise new opportunities.
  4. Significant evidence of clarity as a strategic thinker, ability to be adaptive and future oriented in a way that provides real impact.
  5. Strong knowledge of imaging and biomedical engineering and related industries and experience in leadership of research projects conducted for these industries (or similar industries).
  6. Experience with successful supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate research student projects.
