This opportunity is motivated by the fundamental and profoundly enabling role that software plays in our research, our learning and teaching, and our engagements with industry. We seek to expand our workforce in this area to increase the benefits we deliver.

While this critical position will sit within the School's Data Science Discipline, we seek someone whose expertise and approach to software development could also enable interdisciplinary research collaborations.

This position will involve teaching across a range of software development and maintenance topics; conducting high-quality research in one or more of the School’s six research disciplines; and providing leadership in a university setting.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Delivering research-inspired teaching in a variety of contemporary software development and maintenance topics (e.g., object-oriented programming, agile processes, scalable development practices, legacy system re-engineering, etc.) across a range of modern technologies and applications (e.g., cloud computing, scalable computing, Internet of Things, microservices, distributed computing).
  • Conducting software-oriented research in one or more of the School’s established research disciplines, including publication of academic research papers, supervision of research staff, and attracting government and industry-funded research income.
  • Publication of academic research papers, supervision of research staff, and attracting government and industry-funded research income.
  • Service to the university through mentoring, participation in relevant academic committees, assistance with student recruitment activities and extra-curricular student events (e.g., coding competitions, hackathons).
  • Contributing to the profession through appropriate engagement with conference organisation, journal manuscript reviewing.
  • Supervision of student projects at both undergraduate (Bachelors) and postgraduate (Masters and Doctorate) levels.
  • Implementing and administering University policy within the Faculty with respect to equitable access to education and workplace health and safety.

  1. Research experience, including a solid track record in high-quality research publications, together with experience in successfully managing research projects.
  2. Record of excellence and leadership in scholarly and innovative approaches to teaching and learning at tertiary level
  3. A solid understanding of modern programming languages and platforms, and contemporary software development principles and practices.  Industry experience in large-scale software development and maintenance would be viewed very favourably.
  4. Experience with successful supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate research student projects.
  5. Significant success in attracting research funding from either government or industry sources.
  6. Strong knowledge of computer science fundamentals (e.g., algorithms and data structures, complexity analysis, compiler theory) is highly desirable.
