Senior Leader, Smart Grid Innovation

The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) seeks a highly motivated senior professional to lead smart grid innovation initiatives in New York State, as a critical member of New York’s “Reforming the Energy Vision” [REV] team. The Senior Leader will help accelerate the transition to a high-performing, integrated electric grid in New York State and will work in support of New York’s overall vision to create a clean, resilient and affordable energy system. The Senior Leader will oversee and coordinate multiple diverse teams implementing a portfolio of grid modernization work that will test, develop and apply new and evolving technologies and systems to manage the flow of electricity more efficiently and enable integration of distributed and intermittent energy resources. New York’s grid innovation portfolio seeks to de-risk advanced technology solutions and enable new business models that can support a more efficient and distributed electric system, consistent with the goals of REV.
The Senior Leader’s primary responsibilities will be:
Stay current on the state-of-the-art in grid-modernization technology, capabilities, and business models.
Advise the REV leadership team on technology issues and grid modernization strategies to consider in policy and market design, ensuring that New York has a technically sound basis for decisions and planning.
Set priorities for the portfolio of grid innovation projects including research development and demonstration activities, REV demo projects, ongoing utility deployments, and activities identified in the utility DSIP filings.
Coordinate cross-functional, interdisciplinary and complementary capabilities across NYSERDA in support of REV objectives.
Facilitate stakeholder and partner engagement
Build key partnerships and alliances within utilities, vendors, third-party solution providers, U.S. Department of Energy and national labs, and the NY Independent System Operator.
Ensure that New York's investments in advanced grid technology capitalize on experiences in other regions of the U.S. and internationally.
Organize and manage an advisory structure of experts and stakeholders to provide input on initiatives.
Integrate/provide direction on smart grid innovation across NYSERDA, New York Power Authority, New York Department of Public Service, and the New York Independent System Operator to achieve maximum impact
Enhance communication, coordination, efficiency, accountability, and leverage the strengths and experience of staff and consultants across the State energy infrastructure.
Identify and prioritize technology innovation needs and opportunities across the grid, with likely focus on the distribution system; including intelligent sensors, diagnostics, simulation and control systems, and advanced power electronics.
Develop application-ready strategies and tools to help electric distribution utilities in New York transition to a high-performing, integrated electric grid.
Advance work to de-risk promising technology, run large-scale pilots and demonstrations.
Align agenda with utilities - reflecting REV mission, utility priorities, and NYSERDA Research, Development & Demonstration [RD&D] risk appetite.
10 or more years of relevant experience with a demonstrated record of success
Insight and understanding of electric utility operations and power delivery systems
Demonstrated problem-solving and technical ability; an entrepreneurial edge, resourcefulness, and adaptability
Keen awareness of new technology and market opportunities in the electric industry
Ability to lead and develop teams to deliver high impact technology solutions
Ability to lead for impact across the agenda and program boundaries
Strong communication skills
Exceptional organizational, time-management and planning skills
A Bachelor's degree in a relevant technical discipline.
An advanced degree preferred.
