MITREs infrastructure engineering team is looking for a Senior Network Security Engineer. This is an opportunity to support an operational infrastructure security environment that is actively engaged in developing and deploying new services in a secure manner.


  • Provide full lifecycle engineering for the infrastructure security environment, to include everything from supporting vendor evaluations, through supporting design and operationalizing, to budgeting for ongoing sustainment and support.

  • Constantly evaluate current security infrastructure for improvement opportunities including automation activities

  • Act as an effective engineer for high-visibility projects

  • Demonstrated ability to develop effective technical and support documentation for use by engineering and sustainment staff to include design & test plans, implementation plans, and automation plans using standard templates (where existing) or proposing & creating new templates where needed.

  • Ability to review operational metrics and make analytic decisions/recommendations about both security issues as well as operational infrastructure performance

  • Ability to engage in analytical troubleshooting and performance analysis work under operational deadlines

  • Ability to participate in on-call rotations and occasional off-hours work to support emergencies and projects

  • Deploy all hardware/software configurations following established standards in an automatable and auditable method.
Level 3


  • Ability to collaborate and communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with internal and cross departmental teams

  • Provide mentoring and support to other staff where needed to help build a knowledge sharing enterprise

  • Strong desire to maintain knowledge of industry standards, trends, and technologies and look for opportunities to implement continuous improvement of existing services.

  • Ability to embrace outside-the-box unique solutions where needed.

  • Ability to influence peers and technical decision-making through negotiation.
Required qualifications

  • Demonstrated operational and hands-on knowledge of multiple firewall and security vendors

  • Demonstrated knowledge of industry trends and developments around infrastructure security

  • Demonstrated experience in automating security infrastructure

  • Familiarity with network design and common routing/switching protocols
Desired Qualifications

  • Experience working with various NIST compliance standards

  • Experience/certifications with ITIL framework and fundamentals

  • Network Security certifications (CCNP, CCIE, PCNSE, CEH, Security+, GSEC, CISSP, etc)

  • Detailed knowledge of network and infrastructure security issues and considerations
