The Advanced Science Research Center (ASRC), is the Graduate Center’s University-wide venture that elevates CUNY’s legacy of scientific research and education through initiatives in five distinctive, but increasingly interconnected disciplines: environmental sciences, nanoscience, neuroscience, photonics, and structural biology. The ASRC is designed to promote a unique, interdisciplinary research culture with researchers from each of the initiatives working side by side in the ASRC’s core facilities, sharing equipment that is among the most advanced available. The ASRC seeks a Research Associate to join the Photonics Initiative. Reporting to the Director of the Photonics Initiative, the Research Associate will be responsible for generating critical data for high-profile publications and grant submissions, maintaining a stable and organized photonics facility.

Duties include but are not limited to:
- Adheres to standards for safety and hygiene and ethical conduct as defined by the University and relevant outside parties;
- Collaborates with internal and external academic colleagues, and participates in knowledge exchange activities to establish research links with industry;
- Conducts experimental research in photonics, with an emphasis on nanophotonics and metamaterials;
- Develops and coordinates research objectives for projects with guidance from the Director of the Photonics Initiative, as needed; collaborates with photonics staff on research projects;
- In direct agreement with the Director, conducts research experiments, and contributes to the development of new research methods and protocols, enhancing the direction of projects, as needed;
- Maintains accurate record of Lab research protocols and updates protocols for each cell type and for each technique; responsible for the orientation and teaching of standard operating procedures to new lab members;
- Works collaboratively with undergraduate and graduate students, giving advice and ensuring that adequate protocols are being followed and proper reagents are being used;
- Participates in the acquisition of data for grant proposals and requests State, Federal and Foundation funding;
- Writes research findings and organizes figures and graphs for progress reports and publications, individually or in collaboration with colleagues, and helps to disseminate results as appropriate in leading peer reviewed journal publications and presentations at national and international conferences;
- Performs other duties as assigned.

General Duties:
- Conducts academic research in connection with CUNY programs; may assist faculty, staff, and students in conducting research and lead research efforts involving others.
- Develops research plans and proposals and participates in acquiring funding.
- Collects, analyzes, and assures validity of data.
- Writes progress reports; writes and publishes findings.
- Collaborates with internal and external colleagues.
- Adheres to standards for safety and hygiene and ethical conduct as defined by the University and relevant outside parties.

Minimum Qualifications:
Doctoral Degree in a related field and demonstrated research ability.

Other Qualifications:
A preferred candidate should have:
- Ph.D. degree in specific research areas (e.g., Photonics, Electrical Engineering, Physics).
- A proven track record of peer reviewed publications in high quality journals.
- Evidence of previous experience in photonics research and experimentation.
- Demonstrated experience working across and within disciplines.
- Ability to collaborate with others and be a team player.
- Ability to work independently.
- Ability to prioritize workload and work under time pressure.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
