Research and Development Engineer

The Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at The Pennsylvania State University (PSU) is an integral part of one of the leading research universities in the nation and serves as a university center of excellence in defense science and technologies, with a focus in naval missions and related areas. The Undersea Systems Office, located in State College, PA, is seeking Systems, Systems Simulation, Transducer, Software, Mechanical Design and Testing, and Electrical engineers.

The Undersea Systems Office (USO) has openings for motivated entry and mid-level engineers to team with mentors and work on complex system-of-systems concepts and development of prototypes to demonstrate concepts. Multiple engineering and science disciplines are needed.

You will be assigned, individually or as part of a team, responsibilities in one or more of the following areas:
• Signal processing
• Data fusion
• Tracking and guidance
• Transducer design
• Mechanical design
• Electrical design
• Software engineering
• Modeling physical systems
• System simulation
• Testing of systems and subsystems, either in a virtual sense, in the laboratory, or in the field
• Post-run analysis and design refinement
• Design trade-offs
• Concept of operations analysis

This job will be filled as a level 1, level 2, or level 3, depending upon the successful candidate's competencies, education, and experience. Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher in an Engineering or Science discipline (Professional Engineer license accepted in lieu of Bachelor's degree), or an equivalent combination of education and experience for a level 1. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher level jobs. A Bachelor's degree (Master's or Ph.D. degree preferred for higher level positions) in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Engineering Science, Aerospace Engineering, Acoustics, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related science or technology degree is desired.

Knowledge of one or more of the following areas is preferred: Acoustics; digital design; LabView; and real-time software programming.

Required experience areas include some combination of: Familiarity with signal processing; competency in writing software (C, C++, Ada, or Fortran) for engineering applications; familiarity with Matlab/Simulink; and proficiency in Microsoft Office tools. Excellent written and oral communication skills, a demonstrated accountability, and good time management is necessary.

A willingness to work within a team environment is also necessary. Some domestic travel may be required. Candidates selected will be subject to a government security investigation. You must be a U.S. citizen to apply. Employment with the Applied Research Laboratory will require successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen. These are one-year, fixed-term renewable appointments.
