Professor: SKA/SARChI Chair in Electromagnetic Systems and EMI Mitigation

Five-year term appointment

 

The SKA SARChI Chair in Electromagnetic Systems and EMI Mitigation was established in 2010 to become a national centre for research in the engineering aspects of radio-astronomy systems, in particular the Square-Kilometre-Array (SKA). The research programmes supported by the Chair include aspects of antenna design, electromagnetic interference and radio frequency receivers. The Chair is in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, where it forms part of the largest radio-frequency engineering research group in Southern Africa.

 

Duties: Managing the SKA/SARChI Chair programme at Stellenbosch University Conducting research in radio-astronomy antenna systems, including computational EM in designing antennas, computational tools for RF design, and validation and testing of RF and antenna systemsSupervising postgraduate students on master’s and doctoral levels Teaching advanced engineering modules Managing research and support staff Managing local and international cooperation agreements Representing Stellenbosch University in local and international SKA working groups.

 

Requirements: Arelevantdoctoraldegree in engineering A proven international publication record A proven research profile demonstrating significant international recognition, specifically in radio-astronomy antennas A demonstrated record of postgraduate student supervision on master’s and doctoral levels A proven record of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching Industrial exposure to radio-astronomy antenna design Good communication and teaching skills Experience in the management of staff and finances Excellent interpersonal and leadership qualities.

 

Recommendations: Experience in the design of microwave antenna subsystems Experience in RF measurements and antenna test range measurements Participation in the SKA or similar international projects.

 

Commencement of duties: 1 July 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter
