As part of Durham University’s Vision 2027 the Department of Computer Science is seeking to appoint a world-leading researcher who will enhance and extend our current research and teaching environment. We invite applicants from academia, industry, or government to join this stimulating and collegial environment.

Durham University pursues academic excellence and has a long history of first-class education and research. It combines innovative research with a strong and rich cultural heritage. Consistently ranked as one of the world’s top universities, Durham provides a unique environment for both staff and students within a distinctive collegiate environment.

Computer Science has been identified as a strategically important area for the University. As part of this, over the next ten years the Department will undergo significant growth, doubling the number of academic staff, increasing its capacity in its current application-oriented research areas, and potentially extending a new research group in a strategic complementary research area.

Computer Science at Durham University is launching as an independent department from August 2017, retaining links with the School of Engineering but operating independently. As a top ten Computer Science Departments in the UK, the Department boasts strong profiles in both research and teaching. It is consistently ranked as one of the best Computer Science Departments for employability.

Essential to the success of our ambitious and exciting plan is the appointment of an outstanding and experienced Professor aligned to one or more areas of applied computer science. The successful candidate will have an established world-leading record of significance and influence within applied computer science. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to: visualisation; computer vision; computer graphics; robotics/ autonomous systems; data analytics/ data science; natural language processing; machine learning; computational neuroscience; cyber security; bioinformatics; and high performance computing. We also encourage outstanding researchers in other areas which can complement our current research strengths.

Candidates will be impassioned by the exciting opportunity facing the Department over the coming ten years, and be motivated and ambitious to contribute to this growth. Ideal candidates will also be capable of engaging strongly with industry, government and potential international partners.

The Department of Computer Science is committed to gender equality and minimising barriers to progression for excellent women scientists and are delighted to hold an Athena SWAN Bronze department award. As such the Department actively encourages applications from women for all its positions.

The successful candidate will receive an internationally competitive compensation package, including pension, relocation allowances and start-up costs, with a salary by negotiation on a Professorial scale that begins at circa £61k and may rise significantly higher, depending on experience.
