Job Details

High Point University invites applications for the position of Professor and Founding Chair of the Department of Computer Science, beginning Fall, 2018. We seek a dynamic and visionary individual to enrich our current program and incorporate emerging areas of computer science, including cybersecurity, cloud computing, artificial intelligence and data science.  This new leader will oversee the transition of a well-established Computer Science program (currently housed within a multidisciplinary Department of Mathematics) into a new department with an innovative and cutting-edge curriculum and with the potential to create new programs in computer engineering or software engineering.

The current rank of Professor is preferred, although outstanding candidates at the Associate Professor rank will be considered.

The successful candidate should have a sustained record of scholarly achievement, an entrepreneurial spirit and an interest in working with highly motivated undergraduate students. While outstanding applicants in all pertinent areas of research will be considered, preference will be given to candidates with expertise in at least one of the following areas: cybersecurity, software engineering, cloud computing, data science, artificial intelligence, or computer engineering.

Applications will be reviewed immediately and the position will remain open until filled. Start date for the position is August 15, 2018. High Point University is committed to diversity in hiring, and is an equal opportunity employer.

Doctorate in computer science or closely related field. The field of specialization is open with a preference for research or teaching in one or more of the following areas: cybersecurity, software engineering, cloud computing, data science, artificial intelligence, or computer engineering.

Experience and Training

The department seeks a candidate with a record of teaching, scholarship and grants that merit appointment to department chair at the level of associate or full professor.

Knowledge, Skills, Ability:

Demonstrated excellence in teaching, service and research as well as prior experience designing and leading new curricular and programmatic initiatives at the university level are expected. We especially seek candidates who are interested in working with highly motivated undergraduate students on real-world projects and purposeful research in a liberal arts setting. Familiarity with ABET accreditation is preferred.

Essential Functions:

The department chair is responsible for the academic leadership of a new Computer Science Department beginning in the fall of 2018. The successful candidate will manage course scheduling, budgeting, hiring and evaluation of faculty, and assessment of programs. The department chair will also work to expand partnerships with other departments across the university (e.g., Game and Interactive Media Design, Criminal Justice, etc.) to provide innovative and integrated educational experiences for all High Point University students.
