About the Position:


Reporting to the Market and Supplier Development Manager, the Procurement Engineer works closely with cross-functional teams accountable for planning and executing various activities in specific fields of expertise related to Procurement Engineering and Commodity Management. Responsible for assisting engineering, supply chain, and commercial procurement in solving Engineering and Process problems as well as managing the operational and technical aspects of Commodity Management.



Position Responsibilities of (including but not limited to):

  • Working as part of a larger team, evaluate new technologies and processes to reduce cost and improve the quality of individual commodities, high level assemblies, and finished products.
  • Using rigorous logically and analytical methods undertake analysis of technical problems and propose solutions based on the engineering analysis. Record and keep track of technical problems and solutions to limit reoccurrence in the future.
  • Interpret engineering specifications and drawing documents to understand key requirements and propose solutions accordingly. Probe all fruitful sources for answers and input.
  • Accurately scope out tasks and projects, including; setting clear objectives and goals, breaking down work into logical process steps and priorities, developing schedules and task/people assignments, anticipating and adjusting for problems and roadblocks, measuring performance against goals and evaluating results. Furthermore, scope out project time frames and level of difficulty.
  • Participate as a key member on a cross functional team to technically qualify and onboard new vendors through extensive industry research and through applying knowledge of processes, best practices and policies.
  • Represent National Grid when working at external supplier locations and act (on occasions) as the sole representative of Procurement Engineering on cross-functional teams.



Knowledge & Experience Required:


  • Ability to communicate at all levels within National Grid and externally to senior leaders (including C level executives).
  • Working knowledge of assembly processes and capability inspection and QA techniques.
  • Excellent interpersonal, presentation, and written communication skills required.
  • In-depth knowledge of current and possible future industry policies, practices, trends, and information.
  • Action oriented and willing to take on challenges. Looks beyond the obvious and doesn’t stop at the first answers.
  • Good ability to prioritize, is responsive, and an overall natural ability to work well with both external suppliers and internal organizations. 
  • Takes responsibilities for actions; confronts problems and issues directly; addresses issues and follows through on commitments.
  • US and International travel required.  (% depends on supplier base, commodity and onsite requirements of the Quality Management System.).          
  • Degree level in Engineering or equivalent discipline experience.
  • Strong industry experience in an Engineering discipline, Co-op, internship or other relevant documented experience.
