Introduction: The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC is seeking a Power Systems/Electronics Engineer.

Job Summary: Design state-of-the-art, highly dynamic power conversion equipment using innovative digital control algorithms to address present day and future Navy challenges. Perform concept development, analysis and design of power systems for shipboard active phased array radars and electronic warfare (EW) systems.

Duties (Listed in order of importance with the estimated amount of time spent at each task):

 

  1. Provide engineering and design for power systems and subsystems to support ongoing research and technology development projects. (20%)
  2. Develop, analyze, and review power system concepts for advanced active phased array radar & EW systems. (20%)
  3. Breadboard and test prototypes to support concept and requirements development. Perform power system trade studies. (20%) 
  4. Develop power system modeling and simulation tools. (20%)
  5. Participate in multi-organization power system working groups and Integrated Product Teams in support of power system development for advanced active phased array radar and EW systems. (20%)

Requirements

Required Qualifications:
B.S. in Electrical Engineering with at least 3 years work experience in power systems and/or power circuit design. Experience in design and analysis of AC/DC converters and DC/DC converters including magnetic design and analysis. Very strong background in both analog and digital control theory and stability analysis, as well as being well versed in MATLAB and Simulink. Ability to obtain a Secret level clearance.

Desired Qualifications:
M.S. in Electrical Engineering with a focus on power systems or control theory and 1 year of work experience and/or relevant coursework in Electrical Engineering with knowledge of Navy shipboard power generation and distribution systems, experience with generator and motor dynamic modeling, understanding of high density power packaging techniques, experience with digital signal processor (DSP) controllers for power control, and experience with EMI/EMC design mitigation techniques, EMI/EMC testing, and EMI/EMC MIL-STD-461.

 
Special Working Conditions (travel, working in closed areas, extended hours): Some local and domestic travel required.
