What Your Job Will Be Like

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Appointee to work on the development of advanced electric field sensing technology using neutral atoms addressed by lasers.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Work with a team of physicists and engineers to successfully advance the science of atomic Rydberg states so they can be employed as a practical sensing mechanism by overcoming challenges in physics and engineering.
  • Develop emerging areas in atomic clocks, optically pumped magnetometers, and other applications of atomic physics.
  • Assist with development of proposals for funding.
Position Information
This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment.

Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.

About Our Team
The Physics-Based Microsystems Department leverages a diverse capability set to provide science and technology products to enhance Sandia’s national security missions.  The department includes a broad set of expertise including atomic physics, micro-optics, and electrochemistry and electroforming.  As part of the Microsystems Engineering Sciences and Applications (MESA) facility, we provide solutions including atomic physics based sensors; atom and ion trapping devices and systems; unique diffractive, sub-wavelength and micro-optical components and systems; critical electrochemical materials processes; and unparalleled micro-machined devices.  In addition to work for internal Sandia organizations, we have an established record of successful engagement with external customers.
Security Clearance
This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE)-granted security clearance.

Sandia will conduct a pre-employment drug testing, and a pre-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record checks, and employment and education verifications. Further, employees in New Mexico must pass a U.S. Air Force background screen for access to the work site. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, rendering the inability to perform the duties assigned and resulting in termination of employment.

If hired without a clearance, and one subsequently becomes required or you bid on positions that require a DOE-granted security clearance, a pre-processing background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications may be conducted prior to a required federal background investigation. Applicants for DOE-granted security clearances must be U.S. citizens and be able to obtain and maintain the appropriate DOE security clearance as required for the position.

Qualifications We Require
  • PhD, in Physics, Electrical Engineering, or related field conferred within five.
  • Experience with atomic physics, diode laser systems, optics, computer control, and/or automated data acquisition.

Qualifications We Desire
  • Strong academic performance as evidenced by minimum cumulative GPA(s) of 3.2/4.0 for each relevant undergraduate degree and 3.5/4.0 for each relevant graduate degree.
  • Excellent communication skills, particularly in written form.
  • Excellent collaboration skills for working in a team environment.
  • Experience with alkali hot-vapor or cold-atom experiments.
  • Experience with atomic vapor cells or vacuum systems.
  • Experience with laser stabilization techniques.
  • Experience with Rydberg spectroscopy.
  • Experience with Matlab and LabView.
  • Experience with data acquisition, signal processing, and data analysis.
  • Track record of successful research and development in atomic physics.
