The Weapons and Systems Engineering Department invites applications for a multi-year position with specific expertise in Control Engineering and Integrated Warfare Systems, to begin the Fall semester of 2018. The incumbents will fill the "PEO-IWS Research Engineer" in the Weapons and Systems Engineering (WSE) Department. Program Executive Officer, Integrated Warfare Systems (PEO-IWS) has primary responsibility for naval combat systems engineering, design and acquisition of weapons systems to assure operationally superior and affordable war-fighting capability. This position will improve the depth and breadth of the core curriculum courses taken by all Midshipmen at the Naval Academy by ensuring the relevance of the course material to improvements and advancements of Fleet Integrated Warfare Systems, and will assist in developing and refining courses offered to Systems Engineering majors.

Duties of this position, specified in the MOA, include: teaching 2-3 sections per semester in areas appropriate to the department’s needs and the background of the individual; conducting research and/or student project support for topics of interest to PEO-IWS and the WSE department; developing course content and laboratory exercises; developing and expanding the department's engineering demonstration activities; identifying appropriate laboratory and classroom equipment and instrumentation that can be procured to expand upon the core education of the midshipmen and their understanding of Integrated Warfare Systems; identifying and assisting with research projects contributing to an enhancement of the education of the midshipmen in the field of Integrated Warfare Systems; identifying and coordinating PEO-IWS related field trips for the USNA faculty and midshipmen in the local area; serving as the liaison between the WSE Department and PEO-IWS command for viable and relevant internship opportunities for the midshipmen; reviewing the WSE disciplines and faculty research interests to identify collaboration opportunities with PEO-IWS engineers; facilitating in the scheduling of seminars, visits, and lectures at USNA by engineering experts from within the Navy, PEO-IWS, and other organizations; and carrying out additional institutional service assignments equivalent to those of full-time faculty members.

  • Master’s Degree (or higher) in engineering with graduate level education or industrial experience in the field of Decision and Control Systems as applied to one or more of the following areas (or closely-related applications): Electronic Warfare, EM and Acoustic Sensing, Sensor Networks, and/or Military Technology.
  • Demonstrated ability to assist in the development of lectures, laboratory exercises, and student projects in Control Systems Engineering
  • Applicants must be U.S. Citizens. (discussed during orientation meeting)



  • Knowledge of various warfare communities associated with the Navy and Marine Corps
  • Familiarity with C, C++, MATLAB, or other programming languages is desirable but not mandatory.
  • Experience with the pedagogy of engineering management, robotics, embedded computing, cyber-physical systems, or biomechanics is a plus.
