The MITRE Army Work Program is over 350 staff years of support across both the operational and institutional Army. We apply a wide range of technical skills from across MITRE to address our Army sponsors most pressing challenges. The Army Program Division Chief Engineer collaborates with the Technical Director and Portfolio Director to develop strategy, shape the content of the technical work program, mentor the work force, and ensure execution of a strong work program aligned to achieve the outcomes of our sponsors. The Chief Engineer is the technical voice of the Army Programs leadership team, managing Army Program work definition and execution. The Chief Engineer serves as a technical contributor, leader, and advisor to the most challenging technical issues we address for our Army sponsors.


The candidate selected for this position will provide technical and domain leadership across the work program to include the following key functions:


  • As part of the division leadership team, develop strategic technical goals and outcomes that will guide division investments, initiatives, and the development of technical talent, labs, and training. Define and develop the technical capabilities of the staff. Help shape the work program to maximize the value we deliver to our Army sponsors.

  • Serve as a senior technical advisor for key areas of the Army work program engaging closely with project leaders, MITRE portfolio managers, and our sponsors.

  • Serve as an internal and external technical and domain thought leader across the Army Program to include finding, developing, and presenting innovative approaches for sponsor challenges. Shape high-quality, high-impact technical work. Foster a culture of technical creativity and excellence focused on achieving sponsor outcomes. Make critically needed technical contributions to important projects across the Army Portfolio.

  • Define and execute the Army Program technical quality process. Support the Technical Director and Portfolio Director to shape the work and align the work program to the Armys most critical outcomes. Drive technical excellence across the Army Program. Foster, mature, and evolve the domain capability areas (DCAs) of the division and mentor engineers leading these DCAs.

  • Lead or participate in senior-level review teams (red teams, independent technical assessments and special studies). Participate as MITRE technical leader and senior advisor for Army sponsor project reviews.

Required Skills.


  • Proven ability to develop S&T strategies, technical strategies, goals and outcomes that will guide Army investments, initiatives, and the development of technical talent, labs, and training.

  • Demonstrated ability to partner internally throughout a large organization and with appropriate external technology organizations, companies and thought leaders.

  • Possess expert knowledge in several of the technical/domain areas identified above.

  • Possess excellent organizational skills and will be capable of communicating clearly on domain and technical terms, with both the engineering staff as well as senior sponsor leadership.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills are required for interaction across the corporation and with senior customers, up to and including Senior Civilian and General Officer level.

  • Must be able to develop trust relationships and work collaboratively across organizations.

  • MITRE will consider only applicants with TS/SCI security clearances.

Preferred Qualifications:


  • An MS or PhD degree

  • A minimum of 15 years of experience in a technical field of relevance to the Army work program.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelors Degree in one of the following disciplines, Electrical, Computer or Systems Engineering and 15 years of related experience.
